Ground Clearance is something that has been in the talks just recently, accompanying the sea of pseudo SUVs that flooded the markets, echoing the dangers that lower ground clearance has, and how you will be stuck on the road. More than anything, it has severely hurt the sedan market in India, which now accounts for just around 10% of the total car sales. But is that really the case? Well, after you check out this list of the sedans with the highest ground clearance, I am sure you will have a second look at these beautiful true enthusiasts' delight. But before that, make sure to join the 91wheels WhatsApp Community to never miss out on any latest news and automotive updates.

1. Maruti Dzire- Rs 6.84 Lakhs

New-gen Maruti Dzire has been launched in India at Rs 6.84 lakhs ex-showroom, and while it takes a new Z-series three pot petrol mill that churns out a little lesser power than before at 80.8 bhp, while makes up for it in terms of efficiency. Although when it comes to the ground clearance at hand, it doesn't stand out among the sedans with the highest ground clearance and only sits at 163 mm high above the ground, which in real life doesn't pose any challenge, but isn't anything boast-worthy as well.

2. Hyundai Aura- Rs 6.54 Lakhs

Hyundai Aura, a contemporary of the Dzire, sits a little above the Dzire at 165 mm of ground clearance, which is what a lot of other sedans, even higher up in the segment, offer. Aura comes with a sole 1.2L petrol Kappa unit that churns out 83PS power and 113.5 Nm of torque with options for both a manual and an AMT gearbox.

3. Hyundai Verna- Rs 11 Lakhs

One of the most loved sedans in the country, the Hyundai Verna, also slots in with a decent 165 mm of ground clearance. This is a decent enough height, and when you combine it with the engine options on offer- the 1.5L nat-asp, with manual and automatic options, and the more punch 1.5L turbo petrol for the enthusiasts, this ground clearance actually helps in keeping the sedan planted and feel more stable at higher speeds (obviously legal!)

4. Honda City- Rs 12.28 Lakhs

Honda City sits at the same spot as the Hyundai Verna, with a ground clearance of 165 mm, making it suitable for urban and bad roads alike. Although due to its suspension tuning and the engine guard down under, there might be occasional underbelly touches with full load, but it is something that comes with sedans. As for the engine option, you get a sole 1.5L petrol mill available with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed CVT gearbox.

5. Tata Tigor- Rs 6 Lakhs

The sub-4-meter sedan from Tata, the Tigor, gets a respectable 170mm. of ground clearance, sitting towards the higher end of the spectrum. Another feather in its cap has to be the factory-fitted CNG option that, although it hits at the power figures slightly, it makes up for it with the fuel economy. Notably, the dual cylinder placement also leaves a good enough boot space, along with the CNG tanks. Notably for the CNG variants, the ground clearance is slightly lower at 165 mm with the added weight.

6. Honda Amaze- Rs Lakhs

The latest launch from Honda, the facelifted Honda Amaze, gets you a good ground clearance of 172 mm, making it practical with both its bad roads maneuverability and the boot space on offer. Like Honda has done with other models, it also gets a single engine option with an option for both manual and automatic gearbox, churning out 90PS power and 110Nm of torque. Not to forget, the brand has introduced a dealership-level fitment of the CNG kits for the Amaze as well as for the Elevate SUV.

7. Tata Tigor EV- 172 mm- Rs 12.49 Lakhs

The electric iteration of the Tigor EV, although visually similar, carries its own distinctions with it, one being the ground clearance, which is a little above the ice trim at 172 mm, in comparison to the 170mm with the ICE model. Notably, Tata Tigor EV is equipped with a 26 kWh battery pack that allows it to travel up to 315 km on a full charge. Under the hood, it runs a 74.7PS electric motor producing 170 Nm of torque, delivering a balanced blend of efficiency and city-friendly performance.

8. VW Virtus- 179 mm- Rs 10.44 Lakhs

Now comes the class-leading of the lot with the German sedans sitting at the top of the list of sedans with the highest ground clearance, and the VW Virtus offers 179mm of ground clearance, making it well suited for almost any kind of rough, patched, or bad roads. With the suspension tuned a little on the stiffer side, it handles the undulating surfaces well and offers the peace of mind that a sedan owner will be thankful for. It comes with two engine options- 1.0L turbo petrol and a 1.5L turbo petrol, with no option for a diesel mill.

9. Skoda Slavia- 149 mm- Rs Lakhs

Twin to the Virtus, the Skoda Slavia also gets the same, a mammoth 179mm unladen ground clearance with a similar kind of powertrain option as the Virtus. Notably, the Slavia offers 145mm of ground clearance when fully loaded, which again is a pretty decent figure to boast.

Verdict

Gone are the days when sedans were low slung so much that they scraped every speed bumps or the potholes that lay on the journey. In this regard, the German mass market sedans deserve much appreciation for almost venturing into the SUV space with the kind of space it offers between the bodyshell and the roads. However, complaining about low ground clearance while talking about sedans and how anything lesser is impractical, is a little overblown and a marketing gimmick to make sure the SUVs keep on rolling off the showrooms. This list proves it wrong and while I may be a little biased towards sedans, I love the new-age SUVs equally, just to be clear!
