How To Register For The Fancy Number Auction?
Everything kicks off with the centralized Vahan portal. Although the steps may vary a bit depending on the state you're in, the fundamental process stays consistent. Here's a straightforward breakdown that you can follow:
- Step 1: Sign up at the Vahan Fancy Number portal. Fill in your state, name, mobile number, and the verification code.
- Step 2: Once logged in, go to the number selection section. Choose your RTO to check out available numbers from the current series and any unsold ones from the previous series.
- Step 3: Pick a number and proceed to register. They'll ask for the application number this is the one from the temporary registration where you paid the tax. Find it in the SMS from Vahan or contact the showroom or dealer who handled it for you.
- Step 4: Fill in the application number, and your details will automatically show up. Now, make the payment for the chosen number. After that, your application is in, and all that's left is to wait for the auction process.

Auction Process & RTO Approval: Placing Your Number Plate Order
You've got a week to apply for the auction, starting from Monday at 11 AM until Saturday at 4 PM. If there are multiple applications for the same number, we'll hold an auction from Saturday at 4 PM to Monday at 10:30 PM. Here are the next steps in this process:
- Step 1: First, go to your online account and bid in multiples of 1000. Remember, you only pay this amount if you win the bid.
- Step 2: Once you win, you'll get a confirmation via SMS and email. After that, the RTO will take about 2 days to process your number for permanent registration, provided you've paid the full bidding amount.
- Step 3: When the RTO is done, you'll receive an SMS confirming approval. Just give your dealer a call to order your number plate, usually sorted within 2 days.
What Will Happen If You Fail the Bid Process?
No need to stress if your bid fails. Your initial payment, the base price, will be refunded to you. In case of a bid loss, you can try again for a new choice number by simply repaying the base price. Alternatively, if you prefer a random number, just reach out directly to the RTO.
Just remember, numbers 1 to 9999 are not up for grabs all at once; the RTO releases them in batches. Keep in mind that RTOs only open a limited number of sets at a time.
Verdict
The process is organized, but the auction part can be a bit tricky. It's important for applicants to understand how things work to navigate through the details smoothly.
