- To take over from where the Gypsy left
- India to get the 5-door version only
- Will come with a 1500cc petrol engine
Yes, you read that right. Those who have been waiting for the Maruti Jimny might have a reason to get excited. As per our sources, Maruti Suzuki will not only showcase the made for India 5-door Jimny at the Auto Expo, they might even initiate official bookings as well. Further, this 4x4 SUV will be sold via Nexa outlets, not Arena. This will take place on the 2nd day of the Expo, 12th January 2023.
When launched, this will be the most affordable 4x4 in India, taking on the likes of the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha. Both these rivals will also be getting longer 5-door versions at a later stage in the market. The Thar will also gets a more affordable RWD variant with a smaller diesel engine very soon. As for the Jimny, it will use the 1.5 litre K15B unit that was previously powering the XL6 and the Ertiga. While these two MPVs now have the K15C unit, the Jimny will stick with the K15B unit that offers peppier performance, even if at the cost of fuel economy.
The Jimny has always been a 3-door SUV but for the Indian market, Maruti has developed the 5-door model. This makes it more practical and offers space for 5 along with a possible 300-400 litre boot. All other features and specifications remain similar to that of the 3-door model. The Jimny has a big fanbase internationally and we are sure enthusiasts will end up importing body kids, alloy wheels, custom parts and even performance upgrades.
In other news, do check out the list of electric SUVs that will be showcased the Auto Expo. Yes, electric is the future of mobility and we might end up seeing a dozen showcases including possible launches. While Mahindra isn't participating at the Expo, they will soon launch the XUV400 as well.
