- The Aera features a 5 kWh lithium-ion battery with liquid cooling
- The manufacturing facility can produce up to 60,000 units per year, with plans for expansion
Electric two-wheeler start-up Matter has rescheduled the delivery timeline for its Aera electric motorcycle. Initially planned for September, customer deliveries will now commence between January and March next year. While the precise reason for the delay remains undisclosed, Matter aims to fulfill over 40,000 pre-booked Aera orders in 2024 from its Gujarat facility, which has the capacity to manufacture 60,000 units yearly, expandable to 120,000 units.
In the competitive landscape, the Aera contends with its rivals like the Tork Kratos R, Oben Rorr, and Revolt RV400.
Additionally, the FAME-II subsidy revision led to an increased price tag for the Aera, which originally carried a launch price of Rs 1.44 lakh for the 5000 variant and Rs 1.54 lakh for the 5000 Plus variant (ex-showroom). The revised pricing sets it at Rs 1.74 lakh (5000) and Rs 1.84 lakh (5000 Plus, ex-showroom). Matter, however, committed to selling the pre-booked units at the original launch prices.

One of the unique features of the Aera is its four-speed sequential manual transmission, making it the only electric motorcycle in India with this characteristic. All Aera variants share a 5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a liquid-cooling system, a pioneering feature in the Indian electric two-wheeler market. The Aera boasts a peak power output of 14 bhp and an estimated real-world range of 125 kilometers.
Furthermore, the Aera incorporates a 1 kW onboard charger, which can fully charge the motorcycle in under five hours. The Aera is also compatible with DC fast charging, and will have a fast-charging time of under two hours, as per Matter. The Aera 5000 and 5000 Plus variants will soon be joined by two other models, potentially featuring a larger 6 kWh battery. Matter also plans to expand its presence in a more accessible motorcycle segment in the near future.
Verdict
In summary, Matter's Aera electric motorcycle is gearing up for an early 2024 debut in India, with deliveries rescheduled to accommodate production and demand. The price hike, influenced by FAME-II subsidy alterations, underscores the challenges electric vehicle manufacturers face in the evolving Indian market. Aera's distinctive features, including the manual transmission and innovative cooling system, set it apart in the electric two-wheeler segment.
