KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Skoda Kushaq to get a new engine option
- More affordable 1.5L turbo petrol engine in the works
- Aimed at offering distinction from Kylaq
Skoda Kylaq has just been launched at a starting price of Rs. 7.89 lakhs going all the way up to 14.40 lakhs with a more fierce rivalry in sight within the sub-4-meter SUV segment. However, with the price and positioning with a lot of shared componentry, there is still not much distinction between the Skoda Kuahq and the Kylaq, leaving obviously the size. Addressing this same issue, Skoda is gearing up to offer a big differentiator to the Kushaq with a new, more affordable 1.5L turbo petrol mill soon. Skoda Kushaq To Get A New 1.5L Turbo Petrol Engine
Skoda recently announced the pricing for the Kylaq compact SUV, which ranges yesterday along with the complete variant list. Sharing the platform and engine with the Skoda Kushaq, the Kylaq's pricing overlaps with its larger sibling. To differentiate the two models, Skoda plans to introduce more affordable trims for the Kushaq, possibly with the 1.5-liter TSI engine. Skoda plans to reposition the Kushaq to focus on the 1.5-liter TSI variants, while the 1.0-liter turbo petrol variants will be more focused on the Kylaq.
This strategy aims to differentiate the Kushaq from the newly launched Kylaq and address the overlap that is currently in sight. Skoda is also exploring options to enhance Kushaq's value proposition through feature upgrades and potential warranty enhancements. Another thing is that with the introduction of a more affordable 1.5L turbo petrol option, its appeal would increase and the reliance on the 1.0L turbo could ease out which currently accounts for almost 85% of Kushaq's sales.

Powertrain Details
The Skoda Kushaq is powered by a 1.0-liter turbo-petrol engine producing 115 PS and 178 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Alternatively, it offers a more powerful 1.5-liter turbo-petrol engine generating 150 PS and 250 Nm of torque, exclusively mated to a 7-speed DCT gearbox. Although the 1.5L mill earlier offered a manual transmission, it was shelved a while ago.
While it goes head-to-head against the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, Volkswagen Taigun, and Honda Elevate, it is currently priced at Rs. 10.89 lakhs ex-showroom starting price.
Verdict
Skoda India is gradually carving out its place in the Indian market with models like the Kushaq picking up pace with strong mechanics and the 5-star studded safety rating from the Global NCAP. With the latest introduction of Kylaq, the brand can now focus on making the Kushaq a litlle different and offer a better prosposition than before. The more affordable turbo petrol engine option could very well prove to be a bigger driving force for the sales of this midsize SUV and increase its market share.
