Best Cars For Elderly And Senior Citizen Drivers Under Rs 10 Lakh

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Increased number of senior citizens are continuing their need and passion for driving
  • Almost all models under Rs 10 lakh come with optional automatic transmission
  • Many affordable cars are suitable for elderly in many ways

An increasing number of senior citizens are getting behind the wheel these days. There are numerous reasons for this - the need to be independent, exploring quiet and eco-friendly weekend destinations, or just driving down to meet grandkids or age-old friends. Thankfully, the Indian market has no dearth of options and hence I thought of coming up with a quick listicle on best cars for senior citizens in India, with budget being under Rs 10 lakh. Before we move ahead, don't forget to tell us your picks here - our 91Wheels WhatsApp Group.

1. Maruti S-Presso

Type : Entry level hatchback
Automatic from Rs 5.7 lakh

The little 'big' car from the house of Maruti Suzuki is popular in smaller towns and cities. It offers easy ingress-egress which is a priority for old people. The speedometer console is placed in the centre of the dashboard, thereby giving a clear view ahead of the steering wheel. Maruti's 1000cc engine is excellent on fuel economy and the 5-speed AMT offers relatively jerk free shifts. Icing on the cake are year long discounts and offers, thereby making this is a good choice!

2. Maruti Wagon R

Type : Small hatchback
Automatic from Rs 6.5 lakh

This is undoubtedly one of the best cars for senior citizens in India. While the young at heart may not love the design and enthusiasts will question its NCAP safety rating, the fact is that the pros outshine the shortcomings. A tall boy design, ingress-egress, excellent visibility and bullet proof reliability keep the Wagon R above its rivals when it comes to a user-friendly car for old people. The automatic AMT can be hand with both 1.0 and 1.2-litre engine options.

3. MG Comet EV

Type : Small hatchback
Automatic from Rs 6.99 lakh

This most affordable EV in this list of best cars for senior citizens comes from the house of Morris Garages. Though sales are lower than expected, the Comet makes a lot of practical sense for old people. First, given the (usually) low daily running, owners will need to charge this possibly once a week only. Second, given its small size, the Comet is a breeze to drive in urban conditions. Next, its noise-less, jerk free (no AMT) and the large, no, HUGE windows gives it an airy feel with excellent visibility around. If you can possibly install a charger in a dedicated parking at home, we recommend this little wonder!

4. Tata Punch

Type: Entry level SUV
Automatic from Rs 7.60 lakh

The most affordable SUV in this list of best cars for senior citizens is the 1.2-litre Tata Punch AMT. It is also one of the safest option here (along with the Nexon), and if safety is what you seek, look no further. The Tata Punch also scores high marks for ingress-egress, a great stable suspension for extended highway runs and frankly, it looks great as well! At the same time, do note that the 3-pot engine isn't the most refined of the lot and Tata's aftersales service may not match upto the some of the other key players in this listicle.

5. Hyundai Exter

Type: Entry level SUV
Automatic from Rs 8.23 lakh

best cars for senior citizens

If you seek better quality and a smoother engine, you can opt for the Hyundai Exter AMT for about 7.5% more than the Punch AMT. It looks odd, but you cannot question the Exter on many key parameters. These include a plusher ride quality for the elderly, a tall boy design that makes the cabin feel airy, a better tuned AMT gearbox and upto 7 years of extended warranty - the last point offers excellent peace of mind. However, do note that the Hyundai Exter is far narrower than the Tata Punch and the second row is best only for 2 adults in most cases.

6. Tata Nexon

Type: Compact SUV
Automatic from Rs 9.70 lakh

The stunning new Tata Nexon enters this list with a price tag of 9.70 for the entry-level automatic model. The updated model looks fresh and sporty and you can't question the 5-star safety rating. Like the Punch, its motor isn't as refined as others. Apart from this though, we can't find a fault with this model. It feels well built, offers a robust suspension set-up and the engine is known for long term reliability now - same unit, in different states of tune used in the Tiago, Tigor, Altroz and Punch. The 1.2-litre turbocharged engine is good on performance as well.

7. Nissan Magnite CVT

Type: Compact SUV
Automatic from Rs 9.84 lakh

best cars for senior citizens

The most affordable CVT auto in this list comes from Nissan. The Magnite has been a winner for the Japanese brand and Geza edition is loaded with extra features like a bigger screen (for the price) and better audio output quality. The 1.0-litre turbo engine, along with the response CVT gearbox makes it a great urban car. The Magnite also scores high on safety with a 4 star NCAP rating. While the ground clearance is also good at 205mm, the only shortcoming here is the slightly firm ride quality that the elderly might not like in the long term usage. But, the value proposition should make up for that, right?
The same engine-transmission configuration was taken by us to the world's highest motorable pass, Umling la. Do have a look!

8. Mahindra 3XO

Type: Compact SUV
Automatic from Rs 9.99 lakh

The last car in the list is also the safest, even if by a small margin. The new 2024 3XO looks great and the MX2 Pro version offers more kit over the Nexon Smart Plus mentioned above. A lot of senior citizens (above 60 years) wish to re-live their life and features like a sunroof are sometimes on their list. The 3XO not only offers that, it also comes with a superior torque converter automatic as compared to the Nexon AMT. These are ticks make the 3XO a great value deal as well. That said, it comes with a smaller boot - 295 litre as compared to 100 more on the Nexon. This could be a deal breaker for those looking at multiple trips every year.

Verdict

There is no age bar for living your passion for driving. The diverse Indian automobile market has options for all kind of buyers. If you are a son or a daughter looking at gifting your parents a perfect new car, I am sure these options will help you out. And incase, you are a senior citizen looking at a new set of wheels, we really hope the options above would help you. Happy motoring!
