Skoda Kodiaq - Old vs New
Price
The last recorded price of the Skoda Kodiaq 1st generation was Rs 38.50 lakh, and it was available in three iterations - Style, Sportline, and L&K. The top trim price was Rs 39.99 lakh, and getting it on-road after paying taxes would take its price to around Rs 45 lakh. Now, for the 2nd generation model, Skoda has simplified the variants lineup even more by introducing just 2 variants - Sportline and Selection L&K. The difference between them is quite easy to understand, and there is no distinction in their powertrain setup. However, the asking price has gone significantly up by Rs 8.39 lakh.
As the new Kodiaq starts at Rs 46.89 lakh (ex-showroom), the second trim costs Rs 48.69 lakh. To add more, as per our calculations, the on-road price will cost around Rs 55 lakh.
Engine Setup
Skoda has continued with the same 2.0L TSI 4-cylinder petrol engine with 7-speed DSG. However, the power figures have gone up this time. As the last gen Kodiaq engine used to produce 190 PS and 320 Nm of peak toruqe, but the new one makes 204 PS, which is 14 PS more. So, the engine has been tweaked and for everyone surprise, its fuel efficiency has also become better.
1st gen Kodiaq claimed fuel efficiency as per ARAI was 13.32 kmpl, and the new one's ARAI figures are 14.86 kmpl. To add more, the 4X4 drivetrain is again standard on all trims like before.
Exterior

In India, we say, "Jo dikhta hei, wo bikta hei," which translates to "what is seen is sold," and the designers at Skoda took this mantra seriously, as the Kodiaq looks absolutely luxurious and at the same time bold from every angle. Compared to the last generation, the new one is 59 mm longer and 22 mm wider. However, the height has gone down, and the wheelbase remains the same. Moreover, we are not sure about the exact figures of ground clearance, as with the latest model, Skoda provided the figures after fully loading it up, and that measures to 155 mm, which is obviously not its original figures. That said, our assumption is that it will be somewhere around 180mm to 185mm.
Dimensions | 1st Gen | 2nd Gen |
Length | 4699 mm | 4758 mm |
Width | 1822 mm | 1864 mm |
Height | 1685 mm | 1679 mm |
Wheelbase | 2791 mm | 2791 mm |
Ground Clearance | 192 mm (Un-laden) | 155 mm (Fully laden) |
Front Profile

Talking about exteriors, the front end now features a bold new grille with 13 vertical bars that honestly looks stupendous. In the top L&K trim, these are covered in chrome and get a horizontal light strip that illuminates the whole grille area, looking supremely elegant at night. Also, the bumper is all new. The last gen had similar details, but with an angular design, and the grille size was perfect - not too small or too big. Plus, the LED lights had a sharpness to them, which is now gone.

Side Profile

Talking about the side profile, the new one appears shorter in height, and it is, plus it looks way more grand. Also, the D-pillar features a dark chrome slate, which adds a touch of sophistication. In the Sportline trim, a dark slate is there, which matches the aesthetics of the variant. In the last model, there was no such thing, but it still exudes elegance from every aspect. Also, in the Selection L&K, Mazeno with Aero trims of 18 inches are there. These feature both alloys and plastic caps that add to the aerodynamics of the SUV and contribute to achieving optimum efficiency. The 1st gen doesn't have anything like this, but rather elegant 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels.

Rear Profile
Lastly, the rear profile hasn't changed much, but it looks shorter than before, and the size of the tail-lights has grown. Plus, it also gets connected lights, joining the current automotive design trends. Also, the bumper is now unpainted and features dark chrome strips. The earlier model had a fully painted bumper and also had fake exhaust tips.

Interior

This is a section where Skoda has made a major change - replacing the overall central console, adding new seats, and bigger screens. Let's talk about the top-end L&K variant first, which gets a dual-tone colour treatment, which Skoda is calling "cognac leather interiors," and a new two-spoke steering wheel. Now, the infotainment screen, which is 13 inches, is positioned above the AC vents. Earlier, it was placed between the vertical AC vents, which from a distance, resembled a window. Also, the virtual cockpit is new, now 10.25 inches, with much crisper graphics.

The seats are also new - which just from looking, appears of top quality, like the one we sees in a Bentley or a Maybachs. On the other hand, the Sportline variant interior is finished in pitch black, matching with the aesthetics of exterior and staying true to its name. Also, the interior gets three-spoke steering wheel, front sports seats, and a black roof. In the last generation model, there are no such special character given to each variant.

Lastly, as the length has increased, it shows in the boot as the now after all three rows up - the boot space is measured as 281L, bigger by 11L from previous gen model. This after folding the two row seats turn into 1976L.

Verdict
So, these are the difference between the new Skoda Kodiaq and old. The new takes the game forward with greater premiumness, and more space than before and more power. However, still lacks some feautres which one would expect in a car over Rs 50 lakh mark. Such as Level 2 ADAS, which is now available in cars like Honda Amaze. Still, on every front this definately feels like an generational update and worth your money.
