2023 Yamaha R3 & MT-03
The R3 was Yamaha's attempt at India's middle-weight sports bike segment. However, its pricing killed it in India. However, its punch-packed performance & reliable engine have created a separate fan base in India. Hence, due to repeated customer inquiries, Yamaha is considering bringing it back. It is likely to use the same 3221cc, parallel-twin engine that makes a peak power of 42 HP. However, Yamaha will use the CBU route hence its pricing will be premium; as we anticipate. Additionally to it, Yamaha will bring its naked cousin the MT-03. The MT-03 was also shown to the dealers at this event. The R3 will compete with the rivals like KTM RC 390 & Kawasaki Ninja 300. Meanwhile, the MT-03 will rival KTM Duke 390 & BMW G 310 R.
R7, MT-07, & MT-09
Yamaha is also planning to bring the R7, MT-07, & MT-09 bikes to India. All of these three models were also shown to the dealers at this event. Yamaha has been teasing the R7 for some time now in India. However, the showcase of these models means the possible launch is near. The R7 & MT-07 are sibling bikes that use the same engine but different body types. The R7 is a sports bike that offers a mix of practicality with its easy riding posture. Also, the 689cc parallel-twin engine is torque-rich and makes a peak power of 73.4 bhp & 63 Nm of torque. The MT-07 is based on the R7 itself but it uses a naked streetfighter body type.
The MT-09, on the other hand, is a big chunky naked sports bike. It uses a bigger 890cc, three-cylinder engine that makes 117 bhp of peak power & 93 Nm of peak torque. The MT-09 is more suited for spirited fast riding and occasional track use as well. It has the potential to offer a complete package of a big bike as well as practicality altogether.
R1 M
Yamaha's most popular as well as flagship sports bike R1 M was also displayed at this event. There are rumors that Yamaha might bring back it in limited numbers. However, it is expected to come via the CBU route and hence it will be costly when compared to some of its rivals like the Kawasaki ZX-10R. The R1 M uses a 998cc, inline-4 cylinder engine. This engine makes a peak power of 200 bhp. The M version is based on the race bikes by Yamaha, therefore, it uses a lot of carbon fiber parts.
Verdict
Yamaha has been absent in the premium performance bike segment in India for a long time. The removal of the previous R3 from the lineup has left a vacant space. However, as the rumors go by, the new lineup that is showcased to dealers will soon launch in India. We feel that the R3 & MT-03 bikes will be the most-awaited ones among the audience.
