Bajaj-Triumph Speed 400: Design

Triumph Speed 400

The design of the Speed 400 is one of its main highlights. It is a roadster bike that has a neo-retro appeal to it. The overall look does feel inspired by the bigger Speed Twin 900. The front end is enriched with a retro round headlight that has a LED setup. Also, the golden colour USD front forks make it look distinctive on the road. It is the rear end that separates the Speed 400 from its bigger siblings. It has a sculpted fuel tank that comes with three different colour options: Carnival Red with Phantom Black, Caspian Blue with Storm Grey, and Phantom Black with Storm Grey. Apart from this, the Speed 400 offers an upright riding position with a flat tubular handlebar and bar-end mirrors. Also, the single exhaust has a brushed aluminium finish to it.

Features

Triumph Speed 400

Triumph has decently equipped the Speed 400 with features. It has a semi-digital instrument console that looks premium and offers a small MID as well. In this MID, the rider can see the trip meter, tachometer, gear position indicator, etc. Additionally, it comes with ride-by-wire throttle, a switchable traction control tech, dual-channel ABS, & even an anti-theft immobiliser as standard equipment. The Speed 400 doesn't come with the option of Bluetooth smartphone connectivity. Additionally, customers can choose modification options via a wide range of 75 accessories.

Engine & Specifications

Triumph Speed 400

The Bajaj-Triumph collab has created a new engine for the Speed 400. It is powered by a 398.15cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. This engine generates a peak power of 39.5 bhp. The max torque is also good at 37.5 Nm and it is achieved at just 6,000 RPM. This power & torque is mated to a 6-speed transmission which also has a slipper-assist clutch. Now, the most interesting bit of this engine is its class-leading service interval of 16,000 km. It is going to be a strong selling point for it when the Speed is launched in India.

Hardware

Triumph Scrambler 400X

Meanwhile, the hardware on the Speed 400 is also top-notch. The front suspension is a 43mm USD unit. Also, it is based on a hybrid perimeter, tubular steel with bolted rear subframe & a twin-side cast aluminium swingarm. The rear suspension is a preload-adjustable gas-charged monoshock unit. In terms of braking, it gets a 300m front disc brake with a 4-piston calliper and a 230mm rear disc brake with a 2-piston calliper. The seat height of the Speed 400 is set at 790mm which is fairly low. The kerb weight of the bike is 170 kg only.

Bajaj-Triumph Speed 400: Price & Rivals

Now, the main proposition of its sales will depend on its pricing of it. While it is being manufactured by Bajaj, the quality of the Speed 400 will be typical Triumph. Additionally, featuring a bigger brand name will possibly mean a higher price tag as well. We expect that the Speed 400 will be priced at around Rs 3 lakh (ex-showroom). Meanwhile, it will rival the likes of the KTM 390 Duke & BMW G 310 R in India. In fact, Royal Enfield Scram 450 will be an addition to its rivals list in the forthcoming future.

Verdict: Bajaj has officially taken over the India operations of Triumph. This also means that the Speed 400 will be a fairly easy motorcycle to maintain. Because Bajaj will be producing the cycle parts. However, it'll be priced at a premium because of the big brand name associated with it.
