What's happening in Gurugram?

In recent days, the Gurugram police have intensified their efforts, seizing nearly 19 vehicles, including auto-rickshaws, motorcycles, and cars, for long-overdue fines. These impounded vehicles have accrued fines exceeding Rs 1 lakh and over 100 challans each. Traffic fines range from Rs 500 to Rs 10,000. Notably, one auto-rickshaw had 289 unpaid challans, while others had up to 269, highlighting a significant issue with traffic violations.

Who are the repeated offenders?

According to recent data, auto-rickshaw drivers are the most frequent offenders in Gurugram, followed by motorcyclists. The process begins with CCTV detection, verification, and then the issuance of e-challans through the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority's (GMDA) Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC).

Common violations include driving on the wrong side, riding without helmets, and running red lights. Additionally, many drivers are using dark window tints to block sunlight. The penalty for this offense is Rs 10,000, as stated on Haryana.police.gov.in.

Currently, there is no automated system for collecting traffic fines in Gurugram. This allows drivers to delay payment, but they face difficulties selling their vehicles and obtaining a non-objection certificate (NOC) from the transport authority adds to that burden.

Impact of this step?

This step taken by the Gurugram Police is a commendable move to punish repeat offenders who believe they can delay paying their e-challans. It serves as a warning to those with unpaid fines and reinforces the importance of following traffic rules to maintain the system's integrity.

Verdict

Given the demand for small urban cars and improving EV infrastructure, there is good scope for new models under the Rs 10 lakh bracket. The Leapmotor T03 might not be the most striking EV, but it ticks all the right boxes as a solution for urban mobility.
