Price & Variants
The most important part of this launch was going to be the pricing. Harley knew that it has to be aggressively priced to gain customer attraction. Hence, the tie-up with Hero has resulted in easy localisation of the motorcycle. Therefore, the pricing of it has turned out to be staggering as well. It is going to be sold in three variants which are as follows:
- Denim - Rs 2.29 lakh
- Vivid - Rs 2.49 lakh
- S - Rs 2.69 lakh
Design
As it is a Harley-Davidson, it had to be a cool-looking bike. Hence, Harley has chosen the roadster design with elements inspired by the bigger X1200. The semi-cruiser styling is well put up and the rider sits a tad upright with footrests at the centre of the bike. Meanwhile, there are neo-retro elements used like a round headlight, a round taillight, & a sculpted fuel tank as well. It is based on a trellis frame and the hardware used is also well setup in order to make it look bigger than its actual size. Overall, it is a comfortable bike to look at; for the least to say.
Features
Harley has well-loaded it in terms of features. For example, it gets LED lights all around. There is also a dual-channel ABS offered as standard. Meanwhile, a single-pod round TFT console has been provided for displaying the info to the rider. This unit displays vital stats like the speedometer, odometer, trip meter, average fuel economy, & service reminder as well. The tachometer has also been neatly integrated into this circular unit. Mind you, it gets Bluetooth tech for connecting phones as well. Riders can use the turn-by-turn navigation on the go and also receive SMS/Call alerts.
Hardware
Harley has made sure that the X440 is equipped with the best hardware. For example, the front suspension is a 43mm KYB USD unit while the rear-end suspension is a preload adjustable twin shock unit. Additionally, if you are planning to buy the base variant, it'll get spoke rims but the middle variant will get you alloy wheels while the top-spec comes with machined diamond-cut alloy wheels. The front tyre size is 18 inches while the rear is a 17-inch wheel. Also, the kerb weight of it is 190.5 kg, the seat height is 805mm, & the ground clearance is 170mm.
Engine & Specifications
For the X440, Harley has developed a brand-new engine. It is a 440cc, single-cylinder, air/oil-cooled unit that makes a peak power of 27 bhp & a peak torque of 38 Nm. This power is mated to a 6-speed transmission which also has a slipper clutch function. The most interesting part of this engine is that it develops the peak torque at a mere 2,000 rpm mark. Thus, the low-speed tractability of the engine is anticipated to be very good.
Rivals In India
The current 250cc-500cc segment is largely owned by Royal Enfield in terms of sales. To break this monopoly, big makers like Harley are trying to intimidate the segment via new products like the X440. If we speak of its direct rivals in India, the current list includes Royal Enfield Hunter 350, the upcoming Triumph Speed 400, & the upcoming Royal Enfield Scrambler 450.
Verdict - The aggressive pricing strategy of Harley-Davidson for the X440 might work in India. It offers good technology & features along with a torque-rich engine. Also, the Hero MotoCorp partnership means that maintaining this bike will be easier as well as pocket-friendly. Tell us in the comments what you think about the newly launched X440.
