The brand new Kia Carens is one of the most popular MPVs in talks right now. With its unofficial bookings already open, it is up for a release this month and has won the hearts of many with its stunning looks and features. With three different engine options on offer, the Kia Carens shares these powertrains from its C-SUV siblings, Kia Seltos and the Hyundai Creta. Despite having common powertrains, performance largely depends upon multiple factors which vary from one platform to another. Here, we will discuss the Kia Carens fuel efficiency figures in details corresponding to each engine and transmission option.
Powertrain Option (Engine+Gearbox Combinations) | Kia Carens Fuel Economy (ARAI claimed) | Kia Seltos Fuel Economy (ARAI claimed) |
1.5-litre Naturally Aspirated Petrol (Manual) | 15.7 km/l | 16.5 km/l |
1.4-litre turbo-Petrol (Manual) | 16.2 km/l | 16.1 km/l |
1.4-litre turbo-Petrol (DCT) | 16.5 km/l | 16.5 km/l |
1.5-litre diesel/manual | 21.3 km/l | 21 km/l |
1.5-litre diesel/AT | 18.4 km/l | 18 km/l |
As per the stats, the tried and tested 1.5-litre diesel motor, coupled with a manual transmission, turns out to be the most efficient of the lot and would be the choice for most long tourers. This is one of the major USPs for the Kia Carens over a comparatively cheaper duo, the XL6 and the Ertiga, as they miss out on a diesel. Moreover, the same diesel powertrain in the Carens is much more fuel efficient than the Seltos!
For petrolheads, the 1.4-litre turbo and 1.5 litre naturally aspirated engines on offer are a decent package too! Even though the Carens with a naturally aspirated engines lags behind the Seltos in terms of fuel economy, the 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine takes the lead!
Surprisingly, the 1.4-litre turbo petrol variant equipped with a DCT turns out to be more fuel efficient than the manual transmission. Cheers to the dual clutches which won't let you miss a fraction of a second while changing gears!
Turbocharged petrol engines are always peppier and more fun to drive when compared to the naturally aspirated ones. Pulling up like a beast, pushing you back into your seat, thus not letting you down whenever you floor the accelerator pedal!
Being an MPV, the Carens will be offered in 6 and 7 seater configurations with a total of 5 well equipped variants to choose from. It has many first in segment features which make it an attractive package, and its unique styling indeed proves to be a head turner! Kia has managed to squeeze into the MPV segment with a reasonably thought out product, and we believe it can stand up to the expectations of the Indian motorists. The key competitors for the Kia Carens in this segment are Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and XL6, Hyundai Alcazar and Mahindra Marazzo.
