Launched in October 2021, the Mahindra XUV700 has been available in petrol and diesel variants, with both engine options on offer with manual and automatic transmission choices
The Mahindra XUV700 has been nothing short of stellar success, with its waiting period extending into the second half of next year. That said, the high waiting period hasn't exactly been a deterrent for many and the latest SUV from the homegrown carmaker continues garnering more orders with every passing day. As is understandable, it's the diesel engine variant that enjoys a higher demand, while one might get the delivery of the petrol version without having to wait for too long. Still, however, it's the diesel model that continues to rule the roost owing to the higher torque and fuel efficiency it offers.

Now, however, it looks like not everyone is willing to wait too long for the delivery of their SUV and hence, a workaround that could appeal to some is to pick the petrol model over the diesel and install a CNG kit to lower the running costs. In fact, the car you see in the video above not only features a retrofitted CNG kit but even comes with a dual-cylinder set up to boost the driving range. Basically, an owner of Mahindra XUV700 AX5 Petrol MT that has a running of over 150 km a day has resorted to installing a CNG kit to bring the running costs under a check.
But what's rather unusual with installing a CNG kit in the petrol-powered Mahindra XUV700 is that it features a direct-injection turbocharged setup, which is something that's not the case with most of the cars that are usually retrofitted with a CNG kit. Hence, the presenter of the above video clearly advises getting such an installation done only by an expert, failing which, the performance could be hugely impacted.

Another unusual thing with this CNG-powered Mahindra XUV700 is that it features a dual tank setup. However, this has not been necessitated by the mechanicals but the owner of the SUV as he has high daily usage. The presenter then goes on to drive the vehicle and comments that the performance of the motor has not at all been impacted when running on Compressed Natural Gas. He states that the high compression ratio has ensured that the performance of the motor remains unchanged on CNG. Furthermore, he says that while the XUV700 offers a fuel efficiency of 7-8 kmpl on petrol, it can regularly deliver 25 km/kg on CNG, which, coupled with the dual tank setup, can lead to a driving range of more than 500 km.

For the uninitiated, the Mahindra XUV700 is available with turbocharged petrol and diesel engine options. The former is a 2.0-litre direct-injection motor from the carmaker's mStallion family of engines. It offers a maximum power of 200 PS and a peak torque of 380 Nm. The oil-burner on offer displaces 2.2-litre and is available in two states of tune. The mHawk motor offers 155 PS and 360 Nm in the base variant, and 185 PS and 420 Nm (450 Nm with automatic transmission) in the higher trims. Transmission options for both engines include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque-converter automatic. Moreover, both the variants offer three drive modes - Zip, Zap, Zoom. AWD is optional on the diesel variant.
