As per the leaked design patent images, Kawasaki is working on two different prototypes of its hybrid bikes. One is based on the Versys ADV & the other is based on its popular cruiser bike Eliminator. Currently, Kawasaki sells the Ninja 7 & Z7 hybrid bikes in the global markets. With their radical design, the hybrid bikes have been welcomed by motorcycle enthusiasts positively. While it was not easy to combine the battery & engine in a small space, Kawasaki did it quite well with these bikes. However, the awkward shape is evident due to the redesign of the battery box.

On the upcoming hybrid bikes, this battery box will be moved over the top of the engine. Hence, the overall under-seat space will increase and the design will look more conventional on both bikes. On the Eliminator, there will be two fuel tanks attached on both sides of the battery pack. This will give the bike a wider design approach and a better stance. The Versys prototype images showcase a single fuel tank situated on the top of the engine.

Currently, the engine details are unknown but we suspect that Kawasaki will use its hybrid powertrain from the Ninja 7. It is a combo of a 451cc parallel-twin engine that has been mixed with the electric motor. The max power output of it stands at 69bhp and 60Nm. This engine is highly efficient, and it has power modes for fast performance. For now, Kawasaki has no plans to introduce hybrid bikes to India. However, we can not rule out the possibility of the hybrid models coming to India if the taxes on the hybrids are reduced going forward.

Verdict

As much intelligent it sounds, the idea of a hybrid bike comes at a cost. Producing hybrid bikes involves higher input costs and thus the on-road prices of these can be staggering. However, Kawaki's approach of creating new niches is evident through the hybrid models. We sincerely hope that Kawasaki brings these hybrid models to India very soon.
