Toyota Fortuner Mild-Hybrid Launch Likely Next Month

Toyota Fortuner

Toyota is preparing to roll out a significant update to its Toyota Fortuner SUV by introducing a mild-hybrid diesel variant. Production for this new version is already underway, with an official launch expected next month. The updated model will pair the existing 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system, similar to the setup already available in international markets like South Africa and Australia, as well as select variants of the Hilux. Interestingly, the 4x4 versions will likely see the return of the idle start-stop function as well, which was previously offered in 2021 but later discontinued.

Toyota's new 48V mild-hybrid system brings a smart blend of efficiency and performance to the Fortuner. Central to this setup are three main components: a belt-integrated starter generator that takes the place of a traditional alternator, a 48V lithium-ion battery, and a DC-DC converter. Together, these upgrades not only promise up to 10% better fuel economy over the standard diesel variant but also offer practical benefits like smoother engine restarts, regenerative braking, and added torque during acceleration. Despite the focus on efficiency, Toyota has ensured that off-road capabilities remain intact, with the system's components strategically placed to maintain the SUV's robust nature, including its 700 mm water-wading ability.

Toyota Fortuner Petrol Manual Now Discontinued

Toyota Fortuner Right Rear Three Quarter

Following the recent debut of the 2025 Fortuner Legender 4x4 AT, Toyota has quietly discontinued the petrol-manual variants of the Fortuner from April 2025. While the brand hasn't officially stated a reason, the decision is likely driven by low demand and a strategic move to streamline the SUV's powertrain lineup. This update also shifts the entry point of the Fortuner range upward, as the now-discontinued manual version was priced at Rs 33.78 lakh (ex-showroom). The new base variant is the Petrol Automatic 4x2, priced at Rs 35.37 lakh, which not only raises the starting price but also eliminates the option of a manual gearbox, a feature some driving enthusiasts still appreciate for its engagement and control.

Verdict

The upcoming hybrid version of the Toyota Fortuner is anticipated to occupy the upper end of the SUV's pricing spectrum. While official prices are yet to be revealed, the mild-hybrid variant is expected to carry a premium over the current diesel models. That said, the enhanced fuel efficiency, smoother performance, and additional features it offers could make it a compelling upgrade for buyers willing to spend a bit more.
