With the rise in fuel prices, switching to electric cars is the new approach. However, the initial costs of ownership and the range anxiety are still an issue for the mass market. Therefore, the soon to be popular, CNG, is a better alternative to petrol and electric cars as it is not only economical to run but also environmental friendly. Several carmakers have now realised this and are now bringing in CNG friendly products. Just a few days ago, Tata launched both Tiago and Tigor CNG and in this article, we will be sharing the list of upcoming CNG cars that will be launched in 2022. Let's have a look!
Tata Punch
Like Tiago and Tigor, this will be the third CNG product from Tata Motors. There are no official reports from the carmaker but we believe that in mid or late 2022, a CNG variant of the Punch can be expected to boost more sales. It is the most affordable and the safest SUV in its segment. Under the hood, Tata Punch gets a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, BS6 compliant petrol motor. This engine produces 86 bhp at 6000 RPM with a maximum torque of 113 Nm at 3300 RPM. It is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard and an optional AMT unit. With the inclusion of CNG, we can expect the power and torque figures to drop by 10% and will stick close with what Tiago CNG makes which is 72 bhp with 95 Nm. Tata Punch CNG will be mated to a stick shift only.

Maruti Dzire
Ever since its launch, we've been waiting for a more economical Dzire and looks like we might get a CNG variant of the same this year. Maruti Dzire is one of the most fuel economical sedans in its segment and returns an ARAI certified mileage of 23.26 kmpl for the manual and 24.12 kmpl for the AMT. It uses a 1.2L petrol that generates 89 bhp with 113 Nm. With the CNG, expect the power and torque figures to be 74 bhp and 95 Nm which is better than the Dzire Tour CNG.
Maruti Swift
Maruti Swift never got the S-CNG technology, however, this might change in 2022. Powered by the same engine as the Dzire, expect similar power and torque figures but a slightly lower mileage. With the inclusion of CNG, we can expect the prices of Maruti Swift to rise by at least Rs 60,000. The prices of Swift sticks from Rs 5.90 lakh to Rs 9.76 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi.
Tata Altroz
As per reports, Tata Altroz makes to the upcoming CNG cars of 2022 and we can expect the launch by later this year. It is the safest premium hatchback in the segment with a global NCAP rating of 5 stars. Tata Altroz is available with two petrol engines - 1.2L naturally aspirated and a 1.2L turbo. We expect the CNG to be paired with the turbo petrol engine as it'll generate more power and torque compared to the NA.

Tata Nexon
Just a few months ago, Tata launched the Dark Edition of their popular compact SUV, Nexon and it is garnering a good number of sales. Now, as per reports on the internet, there's a possibility of Nexon CNG later this year. Currently, it is powered by a 1.2L turbo petrol that generates as much as 118 bhp with 170 Nm of peak torque. It's safe to say that Nexon will be one of the most powerful CNG SUVs in the segment even with a drop of 10% in power and torque figures. A 6-speed manual will be observed with the CNG Nexon.
Maruti Brezza
Launched with a diesel engine first and then in 2020, it received the homegrown 1.5L petrol. The sales of Brezza have mostly been positive in the market and sometimes even making it the highest-selling SUV. It is due for a facelift for a very long time and with the launch of a new ICE powered model, we can expect CNG equipped Brezza too. The prices for the CNG Brezza will significantly rise by up to Rs 60,000 to Rs 70,000 and it will be limited to the mid, VXI variant only. The price of the VXI variant currently sticks to Rs 8.77 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi.
Toyota Urban Cruiser
Like the Brezza, we expect the facelifted UC to launch soon too. It uses the identical 1.5L petrol that churns out 103 bhp with 138 Nm of peak torque. In its CNG avatar, we expect the power to stick to 90 bhp with 122 Nm of peak torque. A 5-speed manual transmission will be observed as standard on this one.
Hyundai Venue
While it is not confirmed by the carmaker, however, we do expect Venue CNG to launch later in 2022. With the rising competition, Hyundai surely doesn't want to be left behind. We believe the CNG will be paired with the popular 1.0L turbo petrol engine as it is the most demanding of the lot. A 6-speed manual will be made standard and expect the power and torque figures to be 96bhp/160 Nm.

Toyota Innova Crysta
Yes, this might come as a surprise to some but there was Innova CNG in the past. Now, Toyota has been found testing the CNG based Crysta a lot of times and we expect it to be launched in mid-2022. It'll be a great alternative for consumers having low running or even the cab aggregators as it'll bring down the running costs by a huge margin.
The petrol-powered Innova Crysta gets a 2.7L engine that generates as much as 164 bhp with 245 Nm of peak torque. This is mated to a 5-speed manual stick shift as standard and an optional 6-speed torque converter. Expect the power figures to be dropped once it's launched.
Maruti Ertiga Facelift
The most affordable MPV in the market, the launch of the Ertiga facelift is around the corner and we can expect the CNG version too of the same. The CNG powered Ertiga produces 91 bhp with 122 Nm of peak torque. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and will be limited to the mid-spec VXI variant only. Coming to the petrol Ertiga then the biggest change in that will be the replacement of a 4-speed AT with a better 6-speed AT. Currently, Maruti Ertiga is priced from Rs 8.11 lakh to Rs 10.84 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. The facelifted model will be priced a little higher than this.
