The service interval is usually divided into two ways time interval or kilometre duration. A carmaker mentions the service interval in a time/km format. According to this, a car has to be serviced whenever the car has attained a particular time period or a kilometre mark in the odometer after the car has been purchased by you.

For instance, Maruti Suzuki recommends the servicing of its cars in the format of 1 year/10,000 km or whichever is earlier. This means that you have to pay a visit to the service centre either you complete 1 year or you have clocked 10,000 kilometres.
All car manufacturers have different service intervals for their respective cars. While most of them recommend the time interval to be kept as 6 months or 1 year, they do have different kilometre durations. Some of them recommend 10,000 km, while some of them do claim for a mark of 15,000 km, or even more.
Also, some manufacturers do mention that the kilometre duration of their car differs on the basis of fuel service intervals are different for both petrol and diesel variants. For keeping the health of your car as well as the warranty offered by your car manufacturer in check, it is always advised to follow these service intervals.
It is always advised to drop your vehicle at the recommended authorized service workshops listed down by your cars manufacturer in the owners/service manual.
