One of the most heart-in-mouth situations for a car owner arises when the check engine light in the instrument console of his car glows. The yellow light which signals the possible damage happening to one of the various systems linked to the engine or the engine itself does indicate you of the possible minor or major damage coming in your way.
Following are the five reasons why the check engine light of your car starts glowing:-
1. Faulty spark plugs When the spark plugs tend to reach the end of their life cycle or do get clogged with impurities like dirt and dust, they do stop generating enough amount of spark required to burn the fuel, or do produce sparks inconsistently, thus leading to misfires. In the case of misfires or not enough spark generation, the check engine light glows.
2. Damaged fuel cap When the fuel cap is damaged or even loose fitted, the fuel does start leaking out in the form of vapours. This leads to triggering of system sensors, which do notice the loss of fuel, which in turn activates the check engine light.
3. Faulty catalytic converter When the catalytic converter of your car gets damaged or turns faulty, it is unable to convert the harmful exhaust gases into harmless compounds. This not only leads to a loss in power or fuel-efficiency but before that, it indicates you with the possible harm coming in your way by glowing the check engine light.
4. Faulty oxygen sensor If the oxygen sensors are not performing optimally, they fail to judge the amount of oxygen remained in the exhaust system from the unburned fuel. This triggers the engine light, which then indicates you through the instrument console.
5. Faulty mass airflow sensor This particular sensor is purely responsible for controlling the amount of flow of air through the regulation of the fuel injection system. If these sensors corrupt, it ultimately starts turning the spark plugs and catalytic converters faulty, which again triggers the engine light.
