Design and Features

The design of Freedom 125 is quite unique as it features a mix of practicality and a futuristic approach. At the launch, Mr Rajiv Bajaj made it clear that they wanted to keep its styling unique as per the commuter segment standards. Hence, the bike features an overall unique appeal with an LED headlight (top model), front suspension covers, a very different-looking fuel tank, and a long single seat.

The seat of Freedom is the longest seat on any production bike in the world. It can comfortably accommodate 3 people, something which we do not encourage. Moving forward, the tail section also gets a uniquely designed LED light and a big tyre hugger. The dual-tone theme on the top and mid variants, make it look youthful.

Being a CNG motorcycle, its main aim is to target the commuter bike segment. Hence, being on a budget constraint, Bajaj has done its best to equip it with modern features. It gets a negative LCD instrument console that has Bluetooth connectivity and features such as SMS/call alerts and more. Moreover, the top model gets an LED headlight and a front disc brake. Moreover, it is available in 7 colour options - Carribean Blue, Ebony Black - Grey, Pewter Grey - Yellow, Pewter Grey - Black, Racing Red, Ebony Black - Red, and Cyber White.

Engine, Specifications, and Hardware

The most interesting thing about the Freedom is its technical specifications. It is based on a steel trellis frame that incorporates a 2 kg CNG tank and a 2-litre fuel tank, in the middle of the bike. The unique design of the fuel tank has a common flap for both petrol and CNG refilling. Now before you question its safety, Bajaj has already completed 11 different crash tests successfully on it. In fact, one of these tests included a head-on collision with a 1.5-tonne wall at high speed, while a similar test included a 10-tonne truck passing over its CNG tank area. The CNG tank, pressure valve, and other crucial areas remain intact, as per Bajaj.

Moving on, it is powered by a 125cc horizontal engine that uses EFI to fuel the bike. It can start on CNG directly and you can easily switch between petrol and CNG fuel via a button on the switchgear. This engine generates 9.4bhp of peak power and 9.7Nm of peak torque. A 5-speed transmission is used to deliver this power. Another interesting bit is its unique monolink suspension. We still do not know how it rides, as we are yet to ride the bike, but, it surely is a tech carried from a segment above bikes.

Bajaj has used a telescopic suspension at the front of it. This suspension is covered by plastic covers, giving it a big bike look. Additionally, the LED headlight is only offered on the top-spec model. However, the 17-inch alloy wheels and tubeless tyres are standard across all variants. The top model also offers a front disc brake but without any ABS.

Bajaj Freedom 125 CNG Bike Fuel Economy

The fuel economy of the Freedom is claimed at 65 kmpl (on petrol mode) and 101 km/kg (on CNG mode). Combinedly, it can deliver a total riding range of more than 330 km with 2 kg CNG and 2-litre of fuel. However, Bajaj silently claims that their internal tests have achieved much higher figures but those can not be claimed due to legal issues. If so, we expect that the Freedom 125 would easily deliver more than 220 km of range on CNG fuel alone.

While there are no direct rivals to it, Bajaj sees the Honda Shine and Hero Glamour Xtec, as its primary rivals. Both of these competitors are offered within a similar price bracket, offering a decent fuel economy as well.

Verdict

Using CNG as a primary fuel for a motorcycle seems brave as no other OEM has done it till now. But, Bajaj is known to break the boundaries, especially with its aggressive pricing and feature-loaded products. The Freedom 125 is one such product, which we sincerely hope to change the segment of commuter bikes in India. Tell us in the comments what you think of the CNG-petrol hybrid bikes and their future in India.
