Does The Tata Curvv EV Cover 450km In One Charge?

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • We drove the higher-spec Curvv EV 55 for this test.
  • The Curvv EV 55 delivered an efficiency figure of 120Wh per km.
  • Tata says the Curvv delivers an MIDC-claimed 502km on a single charge.

The Tata Curvv EV created a lot of buzz around it with its futuristic looks, modern interiors, set of features, and more importantly its electric drivetrain. However, range anxiety is still a real issue when buying an EV, and that's because of the charging infrastructure, which is catching up, but at a slow pace.

With so much hype around the Curvv EV, we thought of taking matters into our own hands and testing its capabilities out on a hypermile run, by seeing if it can breach the 450km mark or not.

Before we go further into the details of this test and we explain to you what hypermiling is, make sure to join the 91wheels WhatsApp Community to keep up with the latest news and automotive updates.

What Is Hypermiling?

Hypermiling is essentially a way of driving in which one makes use of techniques that are focused on efficiency and saving as much fuel as possible. In this case, since we were driving an EV, our focus was on finding the best possible range from a full charge.

The plan was to drive on open roads, with a light foot and a consistent speed of 70kmph. While hypermiling may not be done by a majority of buyers, what we are interested in finding out is how much efficiency the Tata Curvv EV 55 delivers in such driving conditions. This should also help clarify doubts in the minds of those who are curious about the efficiency of EVs when driving through roads with minimal or zero charging support.

The Math Behind It All

Let's help you understand the calculations and how to evaluate the efficiency of EVs in general. The Tata Curvv EV 55 comes with a 55kWh battery pack, and efficiency is measured in watt-hours per km, or Wh/km. 55kWh essentially means 55,000 watt-hours of energy, and we got a claimed efficiency of 111Wh/km.

To get an idea of the actual range, we will take the 55,000 watt-hours of the battery pack and divide it by the claimed efficiency figure, i.e 111Wh.

The Curvv EV 55 comes with an MIDC-claimed range of 502km, and its battery pack can be charged in a claimed time of 40 minutes via a DC fast charger.

Setting Off In The Tata Curvv EV

After fully charging the Curvv EV, the instrument cluster showed us a claimed figure of 348km on 'eco' mode. We began our trip traversing through the crowded roads of Gurgaon, and eventually making it out to the smooth Delhi-Mumbai expressway, which ended up consuming 10% of battery charge level, having covered a total distance of 45.1km till now.

In the next 42km, the car ended up consuming another 10% of battery charge, bringing it down to 80%. Having covered a total of 87.7km so far, the car showed us a remaining range figure of 313km. Soon after, we picked up something to eat from the famous McDonald's drive-thru.

As we progressed further along the expressway, our average consumption figures started rising up, given that we were going uphill towards the direction of the Aravalli Hills. With the battery level at 60%, the car had 257km of range left, with an average consumption figure of 123Wh/km, and having covered a total distance of 172.7km so far.

We went a little further along the expressway, until it was time to take a U-turn and head back to our base in Gurugram. With clear skies and great views around us, we were driving around in absolute comfort, and the Curvv EV's cabin kept us nicely cocooned from the outer world.

Given that the sun was beating down on us, we kept the air-conditioner on for most part of the journey. We estimated that the average consumption figure should fall down after taking the U-turn back towards Delhi, since we would be heading downhill. This would enable some energy to be recovered with the help of the regen-braking function.

With the drop in elevation, the average fuel consumption kept fluctuating between 123Wh/km to 122Wh/km. By this point, we had covered a total of 260.3km, and we had 40% of battery charge remaining. Meanwhile the car was showing us a remaining range figure of 183km more.

However, as we crossed an overall distance of 306.5km, the battery charge figure also went down to 30%, and the car had 128km of claimed range left. We kept the air-conditioning on throughout, and kept our speeds consistently between 65 to 70kmph.

As we approached closer to the city, we were down to the last 10% of our battery charge. We had covered a total of 396.3km so far, and in this condition, the car's ADAS features get turned off, and its throttle response also becomes more muted, in order to conserve as much energy as possible.

There was another problem; we were still on the expressway, and there was still some time left for us to reach Gurugram City, and eventually the charging station which was 35km away. If you notice the image above, there was no remaining range figure for us to see on the cluster. At this point, the A/C was turned off and our windows rolled down.

However, the Curvv EV did not leave us stranded, and we had some luck on our side as well, as we rolled into Gurugram City, and eventually into the Jio BP Mega charging hub. We finished the drive with 3% battery left, and having covered a total distance of 435.4km, with a final average consumption figure of 120Wh/km.

Verdict

While the Curvv EV did not breach the 450km mark, it has proved that buyers can certainly consider an EV as an option for longer drives. Of course, not everyone will be going on a hypermile run on a daily basis, but the Curvv EV has proved to be efficient enough if needed to be driven in such conditions,
