Honda Amaze: Old vs New – Is It “Amazing” Enough Now?

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Honda Amaze was first launched in 2013, and the second-gen model arrived in 2018.
  •  First-gen Amaze was the first Honda car to get the 1.5-litre diesel engine, which is no longer available.
  • Second-gen Amaze has newer features like cruise control, touchscreen infotainment, and push start-stop button.

While Honda was having a ball with its other successful models, like Jazz, Brio, and City, it tried to capture the volume segment even stronger with the Amaze. A direct rival to the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, the Honda Amaze popularised the compact sedan category while offering a wide choice of powertrain combinations.

However, the first-generation lacked the premium appeal that other Honda cars were known for. Almost half a decade later, Honda introduced a thoroughly revised version of the Amaze. This second-generation model features an all-new design inside and out, in addition to a few new features to make it more appealing to the masses.

Let's see far it has come in this old vs new article, and in the meantime, make sure to join 91Wheels Whatsapp Channel to never miss out on automotive updates.

Honda Amaze Old Vs New: Design And Brief History

Honda Amaze: Old vs New

Launched in 2013, the first-generation Honda Amaze shared many similarities with the then-available Honda Brio. Sharing much of the design with the Brio and an extended boot compartment, the old model came with the same teardrop-shaped halogen headlamps and front doors as the hatchback counterpart.

However, it got a tweaked design for the rear door panels and bumpers, a whole new boot, large halogen tail lamps, and a thick chrome strip. The second-generation Honda Amaze premiered in 2018, and there was a massive shift compared to the old model regarding looks.

With an entirely new design, the new Honda Amaze became sleeker and sharper, inspired by the latest-generation models of larger Honda sedans like the Civic and Accord sold overseas. The facelifted version introduced in 2021 saw it receiving LED projector headlamps and LED inserts in its C-shaped tail lamps and diamond-cut alloy wheels for the first time.

Honda Amaze Old VS New: Powertrains

The old Honda Amaze was the first Honda car in India to get the 1.5-litre Earthdreams diesel engine, which claimed 100 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque and was offered with a 5-speed manual transmission. The Amaze also shared its 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine (90 PS and 110 Nm) with the Brio and was offered with 5-speed manual and CVT gearbox options.

The new Honda Amaze retained both these engine options from the previous-generation model while having the additional option of diesel-CVT variants. With this, it became the first-ever car in India to offer the combination of a diesel engine with a CVT.

However, during the BS6 transition, Honda scrapped the diesel engine altogether. Since then, only 1.2-litre petrol engine is offered with both manual and CVT transmissions.

Shared with the first-generation Honda Brio, the old Honda Amaze had an asymmetric dashboard design in a dual-tone black and beige fabric upholstery theme. It came with the same three-spoke steering wheel with audio and Bluetooth controls, rounded AC vents and an asymmetric centre console with an offset 2-DIN audio system.

This first-generation Amaze got an all-new dashboard design shared with the Mobilio and Brio facelift, with a more angular design for the driver-centric centre console and AC vents. There was also a new 2-DIN audio system, instrument console and automatic climate control in higher variants.

With the second-generation version, the Honda Amaze once again underwent an extensive transformation of its cabin, which now received a rather symmetric layout. The Amaze received an all-new multi-functional steering wheel with additional voice command and cruise control buttons, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system and sleeker AC vents.

It also has more features like an engine push start-stop button and power-folding rearview mirrors, besides having new seats with height adjustment for the drivers seat.

Verdict

Compared to the very basic-looking first-generation model, the new second-generation offered a much more upmarket feel and an increased sense of desirability. With a sleeker design, LED lights on the outside, and a more modern cabin with additional features, the new Amaze felt more premium than the old model, which had many cost-cutting measures.
