BYD Atto 3: ARAI Homologation Certificate
Let's start with understanding the value of an ARAI homologation certificate. This certificate basically gives a thumbs-up to car companies, confirming that their models are good to hit Indian roads. It shows that the vehicles meet all the government's rules and standards, making them fit for the Indian market. Having this certificate also helps manufacturers get approval for all sorts of automotive stuff like vehicles, parts, and systems.
In 2018, the government made a slight relaxation in the rules. They announced that up to 2,500 vehicles could be imported without needing the homologation certificate. However, this limit put a cap on the number of vehicles BYD could import.

BYD Atto 3: Expected To Change Production Method
Thankfully, customers can now breathe a sigh of relief as the long wait is no longer a concern. With the ARAI Homologation certification in hand, there's no longer a restriction on producing only 1200 units.
There's been chatter about Auto 3 using the semi-knock down (SKD) production approach, where partly assembled products are shipped out and then put together in the destination country. But now, it seems they're looking to make a shift to Completely Knocked Down (CKD) production. With CKD, vehicle parts are exported and then assembled either at the dealership or the local factory. This transition marks a change in how things are done, moving towards a more streamlined assembly process.
BYD Atto 3: Battery, Range And More
The Atto 3 comes with a price tag of Rs 33.99 lakh, and if you opt for the exclusive forest green colour, it will cost you an extra Rs 50,000. Under its hood lies a Permanent magnet synchronous motor and a 60.48 kWh battery. This setup delivers a punchy 150 kW of maximum power and a torque of 310 Nm. When it comes to acceleration, it can zoom from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.3 seconds. Plus, it boasts an impressive ARAI range of 521 km on a full charge.
Positioned as a more upscale alternative to the MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric. The facelift model of this EV was officially unveiled in March. While its arrival in the Indian market is anticipated, the exact date has yet to be confirmed.
Verdict
The ARAI homologation certificate for the BYD Atto 3 SUV marks a significant milestone, easing import restrictions and potentially improving availability for eager customers. With its impressive specifications and transition to CKD production, the Atto 3 seems poised to make a notable impact in the Indian EV market.
