With the country moving towards cleaner BS6 emission norms, several carmakers have decided to drop the diesel engine from its portfolio. They believe that the low demands in diesel engines for the lower segment of cars will affect the sales severely. However, some carmakers think otherwise and in this article, we will be sharing you the cheapest BS6 diesel hatchbacks that are available in India right now.

Before we proceed, Tata Tiago was the cheapest diesel hatchbacks in India before BS6 emission norms hit. And KUV100 from Mahindra's line-up was also one of the options. However, they are both discontinued now and are offered in petrol engines only.

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios
Engine - 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, U2 CRDi
Power - 74 bhp and 190 Nm
The Nios is a successor to the Hyundai Grand i10 and offers more space, features and value for money offers. The car was launched in 2019 and just recently came with upgraded 1.2L BS6 diesel engine. The diesel engine is limited to Magna, Sportz and Asta trim. It gets a 5-speed manual transmission along with an optional AMT. The prices for the same sticks to Rs 6.75 lakh to Rs 8.03 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi.
Ford Figo
Engine - 1.5L TDCi
Power - 99 bhp and 215 Nm
This 1.5-litre oil burner is a reliable unit from the Ford which is seen on Figo, Freestyle, Aspire and Ecosport. Although in terms of features, the Figo lags behind the Grand i0 Nios but for someone who is looking to drive this car then the 1.5L engine gives a punchy performance. It is only available with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The prices for the same sticks to Rs 6.86 lakh and top model fetches till Rs 7.85 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi.
Tata Altroz
Engine - 1.5-litre Turbocharged Revotorq
Power - 89 bhp and 200 Nm
Tata Altroz is the newest in the hatchbacks and does well with its fruitful diesel engine. This engine is borrowed from the Nexon and the power delivery has been toned down to deliver good mileage. It gets a 5-speed manual gearbox as opposed to a 6-speed found in Nexon. This car rivals with the likes of Maruti Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz, Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Glanza. It is priced at Rs 6.99 lakh and goes up to Rs 9.34 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi.
Ford Freestyle
Engine - 1.5L TDCI
Power - 99 bhp and 215 Nm
The Freestyle grasps a crossover design from its sibling, Figo. It gets the same 1.5L TDCi diesel engine with same power output. The Freestyle gets increased dimensions over the Figo. It also gets traction control, hill hold control, six airbags and ESP over the Figo. Both the models get 3 years as standard warranty from the manufacturer. Its prices start from Rs 7.34 lakh and go up to Rs 8.19 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi.

Upcoming BS6 Diesel Hatchbacks
Honda Jazz
Engine - 1.5-litre i-DTEC
Power - 99 bhp and 200 Nm
Recently we broke the news that Honda is working on the Jazz facelift. The facelift will come up upgraded BS6 engines and minor tweaks to the profile of the hatchback. It will get tweaked exterior and interior design and some added features like LED headlights, new infotainment system and minor update to the upholstery design. We expect the new model will be launched right after the lockdown and the prices will see a significant amount of hike.
Honda WR-V
Engine - 1.5-litre, i-DTEC Diesel
Power - 99 bhp and 200 Nm
The second unit from the Honda line-up is the facelifted WR-V. We know it's a crossover but people confuse it with the hatchback sometimes. It is mostly known for its quirky design and abundance features. This is another choice if you were to buy an affordable hatchback with a diesel engine. It powers the same unit as seen on the Amaze, Jazz and upcoming City.
Hyundai Elite i20

Well, we are talking about the next-gen i20 which is yet to come to our shores. Packed by a 1.5L unit which is also seen n Creta, this will be rather a de-tuned version. It is seen on the Venue too. The new i20 will pack in new features and comes with the latest bit of features and technology. It will rival with Tata Altroz, Maruti Baleno, Honda Jazz and Toyota Glanza.
