While the Indian car market has recently witnessed a surge in electric vehicles, the entry-level EV segment, where most of the volumes reside, has a minimal presence. The Tata Tiago.EV, Citroen eC3 and MG Comet EV are currently the only entry-level electric vehicles on sale in India. However, better late than never, the entry-level EV segment is finally set to go into full-blown mode with the arrival of a few compact electric vehicles confirmed in the coming months. Here are some of the all-new mass-market compact entry-level electric vehicles that are expected to increase the growth potential of EVs in India. Gensol EV
Expected price: Rs 6-7 lakh
Gensol EV, a homegrown startup for electric vehicles, has been working on a three-wheeled electric car for a long time. A prototype of this unique-looking two-door, three-wheeled electric car was also spied during trial runs towards the end of 2024. The design and a few specifications of the Gensol EV have already been teased on the companys official website, indicating that its launch is nearing.
Going by the teaser, it is safe to say that the upcoming Gensol EV three-wheeled car will have a two-door layout with a single, centrally placed rear wheel. This electric car will come with halogen headlamps and tail lamps, LED DRLs at the front, and basic-looking unpainted flap-type door handles.
The car will also have dual-tone steel wheels and a floating roof design on the outside and a large floating touchscreen infotainment system, a semi-digital instrument console and manual AC controls on the inside. For now, the Gensol EV is confirmed to have a top speed of 80 kmph and a range of 200 km, though the battery and motor specifications are still under wraps.
Vavye EVA
Expected price: Rs 6-7 lakh
Another unique-looking two-door electric car that will go on sale in India in the coming months is the Vavye EVA. Showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo in near-production form, the Vavye EVA is touted to be Indias first solar-powered car.
The Vavye EVA showcased at the Auto Expo 2023 had 150W solar panels that can provide a range of 10-12 km in addition to the range obtained from the 14kWh battery. On a single charge, the 14kWh battery of the EVA can deliver a maximum range of 250 km and can be charged in four hours from a household AC supply.
The four-wheeled Vavye EVA has a unique asymmetric arraignment for the front and rear wheels, with the rear wheels having a smaller track width than the front wheels. This two-door, solar-powered electric car has a minimalist design with 13-inch wheels, aero wheel covers, and front and rear LED lights. On the inside, it gets a unique centrally-placed steering wheel and drivers seat and a full-TFT modern cockpit with an infotainment screen. The 6kW electric motor showcased in the EVA can deliver 40 Nm of maximum torque and 70 kmph top speed.
BYD Seagull
Expected price: Rs 8-9 lakh
After creating a strong brand presence in the luxury categories with the Atto3 crossover and Seal sedan, BYD is now eyeing the compact EV space with its upcoming compact electric vehicle, the Seagull. To be introduced as a direct rival to the Tata Tiago.EV and MG Comet EV, the upcoming BYD Seagull was first showcased to the world at the 2023 Shanghai Motor Show.
BYD has already filed the patent for Seagull in India, indicating that this compact EV's launch can happen anytime soon. Like the Seal and Dolphin from BYD, the Seagull also has marine-inspired design elements, including slim overhangs and raked panels with sharp lines. The new BYD Seagull will have modern features like LED headlamps, LED tail lamps with a connected LED light bar, a 5-inch full-TFT instrument console and a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
Based on a born-electric platform, the BYD Seagull is available overseas with a 100 bhp electric motor and two battery optionsa 30kWh battery with a 305 km range and a 38kWh battery with a 405 km range. However, it is unclear which of the two battery options will be confirmed for the India-spec BY Seagull.
Leapmotor TO3
Expected price: Rs 8-9 lakh
Another all-electric vehicle from China thats set to rival the likes of Tata Tiago.EV and MG Comet EV is the Leapmotor TO3. Stellantis Group, which currently owns and operates Jeep and Citroen brands in India and worldwide, has confirmed that it will introduce the Chinese all-electric car brand Leapmotor in India towards 2024-end. Among the two offerings expected to be launched in the initial stages, the Leapmotor TO3 will be the brand's smaller and more affordable electric vehicle.
Currently available in China, the Leapmotor TO3 is a funky-looking electric hatchback with footprints and dimensions more or less similar to those of the Tiago.EV. The TO3 looks and feels modern with features like an 8-inch TFT instrument console, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a colour-coded dashboard.
In China, the Leapmotor TO3 is on sale with a 55kW electric motor that develops a maximum torque output of 155 Nm. The 36.5kWh battery offered in the TO3 delivers a maximum range of 403 km (NEDC-certified). Once it launches here, this same battery and motor are expected to be offered in the India-spec Leapmotor TO3.
Maruti Suzuki eWX
Expected price: Rs 8-9 lakh
While Maruti Suzuki is already working on bringing in its first all-electric vehicle based on the eVX mid-size SUV concept, the carmaker seems to be planning another surprise with the eWX concept. Suzuki filed a patent for the eWX concept in India, an electric hatchback concept showcased first at the Japan Mobility Show in 2023.
According to industry insiders, Maruti Suzuki might be working on the eWX electric hatchback concept to develop an entry-level EV to compete with cars like Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet EV. The Suzuki eWX concept has a boxy design typical of Japanese Kei cars and measures even smaller than the WagonR and S-Presso hatchbacks from Maruti Suzuki.
The boxy silhouette of the Suzuki eWX four-door concept has curved rectangular lights at the front and rear, with green accents all around. The cabin of the eWX concept has many green highlights, with a modern integrated screen setup over the dashboard. Suzuki has yet to reveal the technical specifications of the eWX concept, but it is expected to deliver a maximum range between 230 and 250 km.
