Global NCAP, under its safe cars for India campaign has crash-tested both the Kiger and Magnite for 2022, and the results are quite reassuring.
Safety standards have been a pertinent issue with Indian cars that is now being finally addressed. The recent Government mandate for auto-manufacturers to build cars with standard 2 Airbags is one such initiative. Despite that build quality and structural integrity still remains to be solved. Both the sub-compact 4-meter SUVs, Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger sit on the same CMF A+ platform.

However, when it comes to safety standards, the Magnite gets dual airbags as standard, and the Kiger gets four airbags with additional front side airbags, as standard. Now, in the GNCAP test results, scores for both the SUVs are the same at 4 stars despite that, there are minute differences and the Achilles heel is in the second row. What more differences are there? Read the details below along with the score sheet
Nissan Magnite (Ex-showroom price (Delhi) - Rs. 5.76 lakh Rs. 10.24 lakh)
Starting with Nissan, as you can see from the score sheet above the Magnite scored 11.85 points out of 17 in the Adult Occupant protection. However, it received an abysmal 2-star rating for Child Occupant Protection, scoring 24.88 points out of possible 49 points. Testers observed that the Magnites bodyshell and footwell area were stable after the crash; however, protection on the drivers chest and knees was marginal.

The Magnite scored poor in the child protection area because it was the base Magnite XE model. This version does not get ISOFIX anchor points for child seats, and the standard three-point safety belts caused the issue.
Renault Kiger (Ex-showrooom price (Delhi) - Rs.6.35 lakhs Rs. 11.05 lakhs)
Being mechanically similar to the Nissan Magnite, has its advantages. The Kiger enjoys one too and that reflects in its 4 stars crash safety ratings from GNCAP. In fact, the Renault Kiger outperforms the Magnite in the Adult Protection section with 12.34 points out of 17. But in the child protection area, Kiger scores less than the Magnite at 21.05 points out of 49. This was because, ISOFIX seats in the Kiger were covered up by seat fabric, thereby hiding it from regular customers.
On top of that, testers have also noted that the Kigers bodyshell was not capable of withstanding further load, thereby making it unstable. The footwell area was stable, though.
