The utility vehicle space is the fastest-growing segment in the Indian Automotive Industry and every carmaker wants to have a share of it. India's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki has two products - Vitara Brezza and S-Cross. However, in the UV segment, the combined sales of both these cars has failed to reach as high as that of Hyundai and Kia.
Let's have a look at the sales figure of Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Kia for June 2021 -
Maruti Suzuki | June 2021 | June 2020 | Difference |
Vitara Brezza | 12,833 | 4,542 | 183% |
S-Cross | 1,441 | - | - |
Total | 14,274 |
For June 2021 combined, the cumulative number comes at 14,274. This is an impressive figure considering Vitara Brezza has a 183% profit in June 2021 when compared with the same month last year. However, let's have a look at what Hyundai and Kia Motors have to offer now.

Creta | 9,941 | 7,207 | 38% |
Tucson | 85 | 30 | 183% |
Total | 14891 | 11366 |
With all the three SUVs combined, Hyundai has a total sales of 14891 units that is quite higher than the Maruti Suzuki.
Kia | June 2021 | June 2020 | Difference |
Sonet | 5,963 | - | - |
Seltos | 8,549 | 7,114 | 20% |
Total | 14,512 |
Kia Motors India is just 2 years old in the market and is now one of the emerging carmakers in the country. Kia sold 14,512 units of both Sonet and Seltos. When compared with Maruti Suzuki then they are ahead of 238 units.
Reasons that make Hyundai and Kia beat the largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, in the UV Segment -
Availability of a diesel engine
This is one of the most important factors that help in generating more sales for both the carmaker. All five SUVs, Venue, Creta, Tucson, Seltos and Sonet are available with an oil burner. One of many things that Maruti Suzuki lacks at this moment.
However, there are reports suggesting that Maruti Suzuki might bring in a more powerful 1.5L in-house DDiS diesel engine early next year. This will be the same unit as seen on the Ertiga and Ciaz in 2019 but will now be BS6 compliant.

Feature-loaded
Both Hyundai and Kia offer features that are at par with the Maruti Suzuki. The prices are more or less the same for all these models but Hyundai and Kia offer more for less. An electric sunroof, wireless charging, larger touchscreen infotainment unit, six airbags are some of the features that come with the South Korean products.
Standard Warranty
Unlike Maruti that offers only 2 years/40,000 km warranty on their products, both Hyundai and Kia offer 3 years/Unlimited km warranty. All these cars are mostly priced at the same price bracket but still, the warranty on the Koreans is more than that offered in Maruti Suzuki.
We believe that the UV segment in the country will continue to grow even for the next year. All the manufacturers have to comply with the market need and right now, the demand is for the SUVs. Having one or two SUVs in the portfolio can be a deciding factor for the existence of the brand. For example, Nissan had Kicks in the portfolio but it was the Magnite that played an important role in the growth. Similarly, Renault brought in the Kiger and that is bringing in more sales than the already established Duster.
