Skoda Slavia CNG Testing Or A New Powertrain?

By the looks of it, the Slavia is toying around with mechanics with an emissions testing kit attached. This gives fuel to the talks about a Slavia CNG making its debut soon. But why do we say so? Skoda in the past had confirmed about a CNG powertrain with the Skoda Rapid, which is now discontinued. However, it could very well be just a routine testing of the current engine options.

While it is not highly likely to be the CNG powertrain, it cannot be hard-pressed sidelined. It could be possible that the Skoda might introduce the economical CNG powertrain in future. And that makes sense keeping in mid the adoption of the same in Indian market. If that happens, it will be interesting to see how the carmaker performers while playing around the greener fuel option.

The Slavia offers a range of powertrain options to choose from. It includes a 115hp, 150Nm 1.0-liter turbo-petrol engine, mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Alternatively, there is a more potent 150hp, 250Nm 1.5-liter turbo-petrol engine available as well. This engine variant comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed DSG gearbox. There is however no diesel option on offer.

After its departure from the Indian market, a section of enthusiast buyers always longed for the return of this sedan. Now after a long time, it is finally making its comeback in the country. The sedan will be entering India through completely CBU route. It makes use of the rule GSR 870 of iports where a carmaker can bring 2500 units to the country without any need for homologation. However, it is important to note that it is not the latest gen Superb.

It comes with a 2.0 litre turbo petrol unit that churns out 190bhp and a peak torque of 320 Nm of torque. While it was earlier price at around 35 lakhs, the CBU route will position it at around 45 lakhs ex-showroom

Verdict

In terms of a CNG sedan, the Indian market is no stranger. While we had Tata Tigor CNG, the C-segemnt still lacks this greener option. If it happens, it would be interesting to see if buyers are willing to adapt it with their bigger sedans.
