Kia made its debut with the Seltos which turned out to be a huge success and further introduced the luxury MPV, Carnival which locks its horns with Innova Crysta. Now, with the Sonet, Kia plans to target Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Ford Ecosport, Maruti Brezza and Mahindra XUV300. In this piece of article, we compare the fuel economy of both petrol and diesel engines of Kia Sonet with its rivals.
Petrol Engine
Kia Sonet borrows its engines from Hyundai Venue - a 1.2L humble naturally aspirated petrol and a powerful 1.0L turbo petrol engine. The power figures remain identical but it is the FE figures which favour the new compact SUV, Sonet.
From the table above, Kia Sonet in its 1.2L manual delivers 18.4 km/l which is highest in the segment. The 7-speed DCT of Kia Sonet delivers 18.3 km/l while that of Venue delivers 18 km/l. Maruti Brezza in its 1.5L AT delivers 18.76 km/l which is highest in the segment for an automatic. Ford Ecosport in its manual form delivers 15.9 km/l while in AT it delivers 14.79 km/l. The figures of Mahindra XUV300 are in BS4 form.

The new Kia Sonet offers 1.5L diesel engine but with two tunes - one with 99 bhp and the other with 113 bhp. The latter is seen on the bigger Kia Seltos too. The transmission on the Sonet continues with a 6-speed manual unit on the 99 bhp power figure while the bigger 113 bhp tuned unit gets a 6-speed AT unit only. The ARAI mileage of Sonet in manual form is 24.1 km/l while in the AT it is reserved at 19.1 km/l.

The second SUV from the list is the Hyundai Venue which offers an ARAI fuel economy of 23.1 km/l with its 6-speed manual gearbox from 1.5L unit. Tata Nexon fairs well and delivers 22.4 km/l for both MT and AMT gearbox. The longest-running compact SUV, Ford Ecosport returns 21.7 km/l from its reliable 1.5L diesel while the XUV300 delivers 20 km/l. It's interesting to see how all these SUVs come with a 1.5L unit.
