The new-generation Mahindra Thar SUV was unveiled in India on August 15, 2020, and it was launched on October 2, 2020. The new-gen Mahindra Thar is leaps and bounds better than its predecessor and the SUV became an instant hit. Mahindra has already garnered more than 50,000 bookings for the Thar within just six months of its launch. Now, according to a new media report, the company is planning to launch a new base variant for the Mahindra Thar to boost its sales even more. Here are all the details about it.
New Base Variant For Mahindra Thar Planned
According to the latest media report, Mahindra is working on a new base variant for the Thar. The upcoming new base variant of the Thar will be powered by a BS6 compliant 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel engine that will churn out less power and torque than the current model. What's good news is that the engine will come mated to both a manual gearbox as well as an automatic transmission. The new base variant of the Thar is reported to get smaller wheels, weigh 100 kgs less than before and most importantly, it will miss out on the 4-wheel drive system and instead, will get 2WD or RWD.

Mahindra Thar currently gets two engine options in India. The first one is a BS6 compliant 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine. This oil-burner churns out 132 PS of power at 3750 RPM and 300 Nm of peak torque between 1600-2800 RPM. It also gets a new BS6 compliant 2.0-litre mStallion T-GDI petrol engine. This new turbo petrol motor churns out 152 PS of power at 5000 RPM and 320 Nm peak torque between 1500-3000 RPM.
