Why This Change?

The carmaker's objective is to reduce carbon emissions by reducing the weight of its vehicles. It is a part of the automaker's new plans regarding carbon neutrality. The Alto K10 will be the first model to lose its weight as per the new strategy. This will also reduce the manufacturing cost of the vehicles which will benefit the customers in the end. It is good to see that a leading carmaker like Suzuki is getting serious about addressing concerns like increasing vehicular emissions. All in all, with the reduced weight, vehicles will consume less fuel, eventually reducing carbon emissions. This change will be beneficial for both OEMs (lower manufacturing cost) and customers (better fuel efficiency).

Suzuki Motor Corporation's Logic

The Japan-based carmaker has taken this decision after various rounds of deliberations with automotive engineers and experts. It says if a vehicle loses 200 kg of weight, it needs 20% and 6% less energy for production and running respectively. Taking note of this statement, we can expect the upcoming Maruti Alto K10 to provide around 3 per cent more fuel efficiency than the current model.

Suzuki to Follow its New Production Strategy

Reducing the weight of existing models is a part of the brand's new production strategy. The automaker also mentioned that it will be updating the Heartect platform, eventually reducing the weight of its various models by the next decade. Notably, some of the most popular Maruti Suzuki models are based on the Heartect platform including the Maruti WagonR, Baleno and Alto K10.

Additionally, the Suzuki Motor Corporation has also decided to manufacture software-defined vehicles (SDV) by sharing the hardware for a lower cost and reusing software, eventually leading to a lower developmental cost.
