Sunroof. This is one feature that is topping the list of 'must have' items on most car buyers' checklist these days. Manufacturers understand this new demand and most vehicles priced upwards of Rs 8 lakh offer this in the higher versions. However, the new Maruti Fronx does not get this and is probably the only missing feature in this new crossover. But Why?
Maruti wanted to offer a sporty looking, low slung and a wide body crossover to the Indian masses. Infact, at 1550mm, the Fronx is just 50mm taller than the Baleno hatchback. With a low height, cars often miss out on interior headroom and this is the reason why Maruti decided to do away with a sunroof. Having a sunroof means missing out on cabin head space due to the inclusion of panels and hence a lower roof.
We had explained the same during our two people space review video of the Fronx at the Auto Expo - hit the play button below to watch it. I stand 6 feet tall and inspite of that, I had a good 2-3 inches of headroom left when seated in the driver's seat. I am sure with a sunroof, the same would not have been possible at all. Apart from this sunroof omission, the Fronx is a feature loaded car. Some of the key highlights include LED lights all around, paddle shifters, 6 Airbags, 9" touch screen infotainment with Arkamys audio, wireless charging, HUD, 360 camera etc.
The Fronx will come with two petrol engine options. The first is the same 1.2-litre non-turbo unit that we see in the Baleno. The second is a 1.0-litre turbo charged option that puts out 100PS of power and 147Nm of torque. Both the engines will be offered with both manual as well as automatic transmission options. The Fronx is expected to carry a premium of Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000 over the Baleno hatchback.
