Maruti Suzuki's first electric vehicle (EV), an SUV, is set to launch in the upcoming financial year (FY2024-2025), according to Rahul Bharti, Maruti Suzuki's Executive Director (Corporate Affairs). The production of the EV will take place at Suzuki Motor Gujarats (SMG) Hansalpur facility, located 90km from Ahmedabad.

Currently, the SMG facility has three plants A, B, and C, and a new production line will be added to manufacture the EV. The upcoming eVX, along with its Toyota counterpart, will be produced at this facility. The EV is expected to be a high-specification SUV with a range of 550km and a 60kWh battery. The production capacity of the SMG plant is over 7.5 lakh units per year, and it has been operational since 2017, recently reaching a milestone of rolling out its three millionth car.
The upcoming eVX from Maruti Suzuki and its Toyota counterpart, as previewed by the Toyota Urban SUV concept, will be built on Toyota's 27PL skateboard platform. This platform is expected to serve as the foundation for additional mass-market electric vehicles in the future. Both SUVs, with a length of 4.3 meters, will leverage their born-electric vehicle architecture to offer spacious cabin interiors. Maruti Suzuki has already initiated road testing for the eVX in India, and spy shots of test mules have provided glimpses of exterior and interior details for the production-spec model.
Battery And Range: Upto 550 km
The eVX boasts a robust 60 kWh battery, claiming an impressive 550 km range on a full charge. Additionally, an alternative variant equipped with a smaller 48 kWh battery is expected, offering a commendable range of approximately 400 km on a full charge.
Verdict
As some manufacturers are actively working to enter the electric vehicle space, others are on a path of continuous evolution. Maruti Suzuki, with its well-established brand reputation, is poised to overcome any disadvantages associated with being a late entrant to the electric vehicle market. However, during the time it takes for Maruti Suzuki's electric cars to hit showrooms, the electric vehicle market is expected to expand significantly. This growth presents an opportunity for increased adaptability and acceptance of electric cars, setting the stage for Maruti Suzuki to make a meaningful impact when its offerings are ready for market rollout.
