Next-Gen WagonR: What's Changing?

WagonR

The upcoming model will include major updates, including an advanced strong hybrid powertrain. Reports suggest that the new WagonR will integrate the hybrid drive motor currently seen in the Solio, paired with Suzuki's Auto Gear Shift technology.

New-gen WagonR: Powertrain

New-gen WagonR

Under the hood, it will feature a 660cc, inline 3-cylinder DOHC petrol engine, producing 54 PS and 58 Nm of torque. Supporting the petrol unit, an electric motor will deliver an additional 10 PS and 29 Nm, linked through an electric continuously variable transmission (e-CVT). This setup is expected to provide better fuel efficiency and lower emissions. This will make it an ideal choice for urban commuters.

New Features and Design Upgrades

Next gen WagonR

Apart from the electrified powertrain, the new-gen WagonR is set to undergo structural enhancements. A significant shift will be the introduction of sliding rear doors, a feature gaining popularity among small Japanese hatchbacks. This upgrade will improve accessibility, particularly in congested urban settings. The interior will also be more versatile, with modular seat configurations to accommodate a range of passenger and cargo needs.

Dimensions and Expected Pricing

In terms of dimensions, the Japan-spec model is expected to measure 3,395 mm in length, 1,475 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height, and probably it will have a wheelbase of 2,460 mm. The vehicle will weigh around 850 kg, maintaining its lightweight advantage for enhanced fuel efficiency and performance. Pricing for the hybrid WagonR in Japan is expected to start at approximately 1.3 million yen, that translates into Rs 7.65 lakh, with the top variant reaching up to 1.9 million yen (Rs 11.19 lakh).

Will India Get the Hybrid WagonR?

WagonR Hybrid

While Suzuki is focusing on Japan for the hybrid WagonR's launch. With some frequent inside tips and news coming from the industry, there are strong indications that Maruti Suzuki is working on an affordable hybrid solution for the Indian market as well. The Indian version is likely to feature a different powertrain which will possibly integrate the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine with an in-house hybrid setup.

Government Policies and Hybrid Challenges in India

However, the feasibility of launching hybrid models in India depends heavily on government policies. Currently, the tax structure is more favorable toward electric vehicles, which attract a GST rate of just 5 percent, along with multiple state-level incentives like road tax waivers under the FAME-II scheme.

In contrast, strong hybrid vehicles face a much higher tax burden, with a GST rate of 28 percent plus an additional cess. With the hybrid vehicle gaining more acceptance and validation than the electrics across the country, the government should take initiatives to reduce the tax rates on hybrids as well.

Verdict

The new-gen Maruti WagonR with a strong hybrid setup could be a game-changer for budget-conscious buyers seeking better mileage without going fully electric. However, India's high taxation on hybrids might push prices up. If Maruti cracks cost-effectiveness, this could be the most practical hybrid for Indian families. But utimately, it's on the Indian goverment to promote hybrid vehicles by reducing the high tax rates on them.
