Tata Altroz, the much-awaited premium hatchback is launched at a price of Rs 5.29 lakh. The car gives its competition a check in terms of features, pricing and what we know so far is a strong bodyshell and its the only car in its segment which scored 5-star rating at the Global NCAP. Comparing the length of all these hatchbacks then Maruti Suzuki Baleno wins the competition. Altroz sets its length at 3,990 mm, just 5 mm short from Baleno. It should be noted that Altroz has got the smallest wheelbase of the lot at 2501 mm. Hyundai Elite i20 gets the biggest wheelbase at 2570 mm.

Hyundai Elite i20 weighs around 1080-1200 kgs while Altroz weights 1034 kg. Maruti Baleno is the lightest of the lot with kerb weight sticking between 865-985 kg.

Tata Altroz is the first premium hatchback to come with a BS6 diesel engine. The four-cylinder, turbocharged unit produces 90 bhp with a peak torque of 200 Nm. The Elite i20 generates 89 bhp from the 1.4L motor and a whopping 220 Nm of peak torque. Maruti Baleno gets a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged motor which churns 75 bhp with 190 Nm of torque. It is the least powerful motor in the lot.
Transmission wise, the Altroz and Baleno get a 5-speed manual gearbox while the Elite i20 is mated to a 6-speed MT. With the new emission norms to take in the place, Maruti Suzuki will axe the diesel engine from the Baleno. Hyundai will continue with the BS6 diesel engine for the Elite i20.

Tata Altroz gets a three cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine which churns out 86 bhp and a torque of 113 Nm. The BS6 engine gets paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox and an automatic transmission is in the works too. Talking about the Hyundai Elite i20 then it comes with 1.2L petrol engine producing 83 bhp and 114 Nm of peak torque. It gets a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno gets three petrol engines, a 1.2-litre, a naturally aspirated engine which churns out 113 Nm. Another 1.2L engine gets 90 bhp with 113 Nm of torque and this one receives a mild hybrid system. The more powerful, turbo petrol unit, 1.0L engine produces 105 bhp with 150 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual gearbox for all the engines and the 1.2L also gets a CVT gearbox.
Hyundai Elite i20 packs a nimble 1.2-litre, naturally aspirated petrol motor which generates 83 bhp on tap along with 114 Nm of peak torque. It offers a 5-speed manual transmission and a CVT gearbox.

Tata has priced the Altroz at Rs 5.29 lakh making it a most affordable option. The top-spec version of the Tata Altroz fetches till Rs 9.29 lakh while that of Maruti Baleno and Hyundai Elite i20 gets a price tag of Rs 9.0 lakh and Rs 9.35 lakh respectively.
