KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Upcoming Punch EV to get major upgrades
- To borrow bigger infotainment screen from Nexon facelift
- Sunroof anticipated to be carried over from the ICE version
While Tata Nexon and the Nexon EV facelift are out in public, the carmaker is shifting focus on its next-in-line task at hand, the Tata Punch EV. When the Nexon EV facelift goes on sale on September 14th, the countdown for the Punch EVs launch will set in motion. And while it sits in a different segment altogether, it is ready to 'punch' above its weight. How?
The answer to this lies in the recent spy shots on the same and we are here to gauge what's coming. Let's delve into the greater details and why we think so.
Tata Punch EV: Borrows 10.25" Touchscreen And Steering Wheel From Nexon Facelift
Tata Motors has introduced the Nexon EV facelift featuring a substantially larger 12.3-inch infotainment screen, with mid-variants equipped with a 10.25-inch unit. It's expected that the higher variants of the Punch EV will adopt the 10.25-inch screen. Notably, the Punch EV's direct competitor, the Citroen eC3, also boasts a similarly sized infotainment display, underlining the growing trend in this segment towards larger and more feature-rich screens.

As it nears its market launch, the Punch EV test mule was spotted in its final stages of road testing on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. This test mule appeared to closely resemble a production-ready unit, featuring equipment that is likely to be carried over to the final production vehicle.
The spy shots of the Punch EV revealed a couple of significant updates. Firstly, it featured an LED headlamp setup, a departure from the standard petrol-powered Punch. Secondly, the interior showcased notable changes, including a new Nexon-inspired steering wheel with an illuminated logo and a significantly larger horizontally oriented infotainment screen, suggesting a more premium and tech-savvy cabin for the electric variant.
Battery And Range
The Punch EV will utilize the ALFA platform coupled with Tata's Gen-2 EV architecture, primarily transforming an internal combustion engine (ICE) platform into an electric vehicle (EV) with substantial modifications. It will feature a liquid-cooled battery and a permanent magnet synchronous motor that drives the front wheels. Similar to Tata Motors' approach with the Tigor, Tiago, and Nexon EVs, the Punch EV is likely to offer consumers a choice between two different battery sizes and charging options, providing versatility to meet varying preferences and requirements.
Expect the range to lie somewhere in the vicinity of 250-300 kms on a single charge, which is a decent figure for a car this size.
Verdict
Tata currently has a lot going on for it, which is a good sign indicating a healthy sales forecast, courtesy of the new Tata Nexon facelift. While the Tata Punch EV aims to strengthen the positioning of the brand in EV space, the current portfolio continues to propel the evergrowing market share of Tata in the electric mobility segment.
