Leading electric vehicle manufacturer, Tata Motors seems to be working towards dominating the electric vehicle industry by launching 10 new electric vehicles (EV) in the near future. Tata Motors is considered the best selling electric car manufacturer in India, however, with the launch of new electric vehicles, the brand sees further growth in demand for their EVs.
The carmaker had recently raised a huge investment from TPG Rise Climate. The firm has mentioned that it is investing Rs.7,500 crore in Tata Motors for the growth of this segment. With this fund, Tata plans on launching 10 new long-range electric vehicles to completely transition from fuel-based vehicle production to electric vehicle manufacturing for the Indian Automotive Industry.
Tata has announced that the company plans to launch electric cars with a significantly larger battery pack than its currently sold products in the EV market. The vehicles to be launched in the future could be packed with drivability and driver-assist features that are best in this segment. With exciting features, tata plans to meet the demands of its EV customers in India.
As for the subsidiary for electric vehicles, Tata plans to name this incorporation as EVCo, an establishment that is working on the upcoming Tata electric four-wheelers. The brand has also stated that it is planning to launch 10 electric vehicles by 2026.
In an interview to the media publication, President of Passenger Vehicles Business at Tata Motors Shailesh Chandra said, "We have a phased plan to move from generation one to subsequent generations of EVs and in that journey, some of our modern architectures will be adapted to make them more electric ready, specifically to accommodate more battery packs."
Chandra has also added that the company will also offer CNG vehicles based on their existing portfolio. Tata Motors plans to add CNG variants in its initial models ie. Tigor, Tiago and Nexon in the first phase and then add new CNG models constructed on the new multi-energy platforms.
Chandra further stated that the new EV division will not look at hybrids, "We are not looking at it (hybrids), as we do not see this as the future. Furthermore, this tech also does not help us meet our CAFE norms. Thus, as things stand, Tata's future passenger vehicle line-up will comprise petrol, diesel, electric and CNG."
