Common Symptoms Of A Faulty Spark Plug And How To Detect It

The spark plug in a petrol engine is responsible for combustion of air and fuel mixture inside the engine. If the spark plug turns faulty, it will not be able to burn the fuel completely, leading to wastage of fuel and inefficient working of the engine.

In petrol-powered cars, which are already being preferred more nowadays as compared to diesel-powered ones, the spark plug is one of the most crucial components in its ignition system. Any minor or major fault happened to the spark plugs will lead to incomplete combustion of the air and fuel mixture entered into the engine.

Following are some common signals which can make you detect the corrupted spark plugs:-

Misfiring of the engine

If the spark plug suffers from incorrect or inconsistent timing of generation of flame from it, the combustion of air and fuel mixture will happen in an inconsistent manner. This can be noticed in the form of a stumbling sound or an inconsistent jerk at times from the engine.

Starting problem

One of the most common symptoms, the engine will suffer from a starting problem in case of the spark plug blow off. The engine will start only after repetitive cranks, and this happens due to the fact that the spark plug might require to heat up for a cold start.

Rough idling of the engine

If the engine starts up comfortably, but runs at high RPMs at idle or dropping its RPMs suddenly, this means that the spark plugs are suffering from incorrect timing or are throwing up flame in a more than required amount.

Low fuel efficiency

The drop in fuel efficiency happens due to a number of reasons, and the faulty spark plug is one of the main culprits to it. A faulty spark plug might not be able to burn in the air and fuel mixture completely or with correct timing, which can result to waste of fuel.

Strong smell of fuel from the exhaust

In case the spark plugs are unable to burn the air and fuel mixture completely, the unburned fuel will then enter into the exhaust system. Due to this, the exhaust pipe will emit strong smell of that unburned fuel.
