Expert Verdict on Basalt
This is a genuine effort by Citroen to get a share of the segment. The Basalt is a practical, no-nonsense product that offers high levels of comfort, class-leading space and easy-to-drive manners. It is an easy-going car, and I love the turbo petrol-automatic combination that makes it a peppy vehicle for enthusiasts. While it is not feature-loaded and crash test ratings might be average, at the given price, the Basalt will be on the radar of many new car buyers. If you have a Citroen outlet in your city, do see this one in person and take an extended test drive as well.
Pros & Cons of Citroen Basalt
Should I buy the Basalt?
If you consider upgrading from a small car to a bigger one, the Citroen Basalt is a strong contender. It is a good family car with a spacious cabin, big boot and excellent ride quality. We love how it drives and the coupe SUV design looks nice on the road. The car is easy on the pocket too and has substantial ground clearance for big speed breakers and poor roads.
However, if features is what you seek, the Basalt might not be for you. It is also a lesser known brand and re-sale value won’t be strong. This is a perfect case of head vs heart : we suggest you take an extended test drive to decide.
- The Basalt’s front end has familiarity with the current crop of models on sale from Citroen in India. The sharp, narrow DRLs and chrome inserts in the grille look great.
- The side profile showcases the length of the car, being almost 10% longer than the cars it is priced along with. The C pillar is wide and extends into the boot for a coupe look.
- The top-spec versions get multispoke 16-inch alloys and matt black cladding all around for a butch SUV look. Ground clearance is rated at 180 mm.
- The rear of the Basalt is unique for the segment. This is a wide car and gets an in-built boot spoiler and a little wing above the rear windshield. Tail lamps wrap around the rear body panel and give the Basalt a unique identity on the road.
- Both the front and rear of the car get pseudo skid plates finished in silver. The Citroen Basalt will be sold in both single-tone and dual-tone options.
Basalt body specifications:
Wheel Size | R16 |
Seating Capacity | 5 seaters |
Ground Clearance | 180 mm |
Boot Space | 470 liters |
- The Citroen Basalt gets a practical cabin that scores top marks for space and usage. The low dashboard aids visibility and airiness in the cabin.
- The light colour theme looks nice, though will be a task to keep the interiors clean and free of marks in the longer run
- Front seats are comfortable and even large adults won’t feel the lack of back or under thigh support. Top versions get mix of leatherette and cloth for upholstery
- The flat bottom steering looks nice and behind it, you get a full digital cluster that showcases a lot of information for the driver.
- The rear bench is a UPS here - its comfortable and even large passengers will not have any lack of room here. All essentials like rear cup holders along with phone holder, rear AC vents, charging port etc are in place here. The Basalt also offers reasonable levels of ingress and egress.
- The Basalt gets a choice of three powertrains. First is a 1200cc three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol motor that is offered with a 5-speed manual only. It puts out 82 PS of power and 115 Nm of torque. The ARAI-rated economy stands at 18.0 kmpl.
- The second engine option is a similar capacity 1200cc engine that is turbo-charged and offered with both a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. With the manual, this engine makes 110 PS of power and 190 Nm of torque. With the automatic, torque further goes up to 205 Nm!
- The fuel economy of 1.2 turbo stands at 19.5 kmpl for the manual and 18.7 kmpl for the automatic gearbox, as per ARAI certification.
- The turbo unit is not only smooth for a 3-cylinder engine but pretty response and punchy. It does not run out of steam quickly and rewards the Basalt with exceptional acceleration figures. The 6-speed automatic scores high marks regarding quick shifts and negligible lags. Infact, for the price, this engine-gearbox combination is best on sale in the Indian market currently.
Basalt engine specifications:
Transmission | Manual & Automatic |
Mileage | 18 kmpl to 19.5 kmpl |
Engine | 1199 cc |
Power | 109 bhp @ 5500 rpm |
Torque | 205 Nm @ 1750 rpm |
Drive Train | FWD |
- The Citroen Basalt comes with 6 Airbags as standard across all versions and this is a welcome feature in our books. Citroen claims the car comes with an advanced safety structure that uses 85% high grade steel. It also has ESP, Hill Hold, TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring system) and seat belt reminder for all seats.
- In terms of features, the top spec version comes with a 26cm touchscreen with wireless connectivity, 17.78cm digital screen, My Citroen Connect 2.0, wireless charger etc.
- However, for the segment, a lot of features are missing. Some of these include the popular sunroof, ventilated or powered seats, keyless entry & go, a 360-degree camera, cruise control, auto headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming inside rear view mirror etc
Basalt features:
360 Degree Camera | No |
TPMS | Yes |
Sunroof | No |
Wireless Charger | Yes |
Ventilated Seats | No |

Latest On Citroen Basalt
Last Updated on 3rd Dec'24: The Citroen Basalt is India’s first mass-market coupe SUV, launched on August 9, 2024. Every reviewer and auto enthusiast can't stop praising it, especially for its incredible turbocharged 3-cylinder engine. Despite all the accolades and a 4-star safety rating at Bharat NCAP, the Basalt hasn't sold well at all. This is mainly due to Citroen's lower brand presence in India.
Citroen has now released pricing for all the versions of the Basalt coupe SUV. The turbo petrol Basalt range starts from Rs 11.49 lakh for the manual version and Rs 12.79 lakh for the automatic version. The non-turbo 1.2 petrol is not available with an automatic gearbox option.
