Tata Harrier is a very popular mid-size SUV in the Indian market. The new 2020 Tata Harrier BS6 is fetching very good sales number for the carmaker as the Indian car buyers are showering love on this great SUV. The Harrier is garnering good sales for the company for sure, however, if we compare the sales figures of the Harrier with its arch-rival, the Harrier is still behind the MG Hector by a considerable margin. But, the things might soon turn around in Harrier's favour as Tata Motors is planning to launch the petrol version of this SUV. In fact, the upcoming 2021 Tata Harrier Turbo Petrol has been recently spied on test in India and here are all the details about it.
First of all, let me tell you why the new Tata Harrier needs a petrol engine when it already has great oil-burner which packs in a great punch and is fuel-efficient both at the same time. So, the Harrier was first launched in early 2019 with the 140 PS diesel engine mated only to a manual gearbox. Earlier this year, Tata Motors gave the Harrier a significant update both cosmetically as well as mechanically and it now gets the 170 PS diesel mill mated to both a manual gearbox as well as an automatic transmission. It also got loads of new features, however, it still misses out on a petrol engine and it is a big drawback. That's because the competitors like the MG Hector, Jeep Compass, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, etc. get a good petrol mill too.
If we see the car sales chart for the month of November 2020, around 2,210 units of Harrier were sold last month. In comparison, MG Motors managed to sell 3,426 units of the MG Hector and Hector Plus in November this year. Out of this 3,426 units of the MG Hector series, more than 50 per cent sales came from petrol versions while the rest of sales came from the oil-burner. Thus, if we compare diesel-only sales, the Harrier outsells the MG Hector but in cumulative sale figures, it is far behind. In fact, even 70 per cent sales of Tata Nexon comes from petrol versions while the diesel contributes to 30 per cent sales only. Tata Motors knows that to tackle the competition and to boost its sales, the company needs a strong turbo petrol mill for the Harrier.
