Just recently, the 2023 Tata Safari facelift has been spied testing after its official launch. But why? You might have this question. Well, Tata Motors is gearing up to launch several new electric vehicles (EVs) in the near future, including the Harrier EV, Safari EV, Curvv EV, and Sierra EV. The company is also working on developing a turbo petrol powertrain. A recent sighting of the Tata Safari facelift in Indore suggests that it might be undergoing testing with either an electric or turbo petrol powertrain.
2023 Tata Safari Facelift: EV Or Turbo Petrol?
Tata Motors seems to be actively testing its vehicles, such as the Safari and Harrier, even after their launches. This could indicate that they are evaluating the performance of the upcoming 1.5L GDI turbo petrol engine, which is expected to be available at least a year from now.

The recent sightings of the Tata Safari facelift with a fully camouflaged exterior suggest that it might be powered by an internal combustion engine (ICE). However, there's also a possibility that Tata is testing the new electric powertrain set to launch before the 1.5L GDI engine. Tata is preparing to introduce four new EVs in early 2024, so it's highly likely that the spied Tata Safari facelift is one of these upcoming EV models. While a turbo petrol variant could be in the works, the full camouflage on this test mule suggests it may be an electric vehicle. The design is expected to remain similar between the ICE and EV versions, with some model-specific features or body kits differentiating them.
Powertrain: Power, Range, And More
Tata Motors has officially confirmed the development of a 1.5L GDI turbo petrol engine, which is expected to generate approximately 170 PS of peak power and 280 Nm of peak torque. While Tata hasn't released specific details about the Harrier EV and Safari EV, the former was showcased as a near-production-ready model at the 2023 Auto Expo.
In terms of the Harrier EV's powertrain, it's likely to feature a large battery, possibly around 60 kWh, providing an estimated range of close to 500 km. There's a high probability of a dual-motor setup with all-wheel drive (AWD), fulfilling the longstanding demand for AWD capabilities in the Harrier and Safari. The features and creature comforts in the electric versions are expected to be similar to their current ICE counterparts.
Verdict
The upcoming Tata Safari is generating excitement with its anticipated electric powertrain and turbo petrol engine. The development aligns with Tata's EV roadmap, offering the prospect of an electric SUV with a substantial range and power. Whether it's electric or turbo petrol, the new Safari retains its stylish design and promises enhanced performance.
