KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Hyundai Exter S variant in pictures
- Takes second to base position after the EX base trim
- Misses out on some features when compared to higher variants
After much anticipation, Hyundai has finally stepped into the micro SUV segment with the Hyundai Exter. The Exter is available in five main variants: EX, S, SX, SX(O), and SX(O) Connect. Earlier, we shared images of the mid-spec SX trim featuring the CNG kit, and now we have acquired photos of the S variant, which is positioned one step above the base variant.
Lets look at everything that you will get in this particular variant.
Hyundai Exter 'S' Variant Details
As one of the lower variants, it comes with halogen headlights connected by a textured pattern, while maintaining the same H-shaped LED DRLs seen on the top-spec SX(O) trim. The 'Exter' badge, positioned below the bonnet line, almost blends in with the white paint. Notably, the S variant boasts a silver-finished skid plate, a feature that is present from the base EX variant and onwards.

From the side view, the Exter's S variant displays body-colored door handles and outside rearview mirrors (ORVMs). While the ORVM-mounted LED turn indicators are present, they are exclusive to the AMT variant. The Exter S is equipped with 14-inch steel wheels, complemented by a plastic cover. Starting from this variant, the micro SUV features a sleek gloss-black finish on the C-pillar, adding a touch of elegance to its overall design.
Since this is the second to-base variant, features are bound to take leave here. The rear of the Exter S variant showcases H-shaped elements in its LED taillights, connected by a piano-black strip with a textured finish. However, it lacks certain features too. That includes loadings like a rear wiper, washer, defogger, shark fin antenna, and roof-mounted spoiler, distinguishing it from the higher variants. Despite these omissions, the Exter S maintains a sleek and attractive appearance with its distinctive design elements.
Interior
The interior will remind you of the Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS as the resemblance is observed at first glance. It comes with a grey theme and fabric upholstery. While the Exter S lacks some elements, it comes equipped with all the essential features. These include a digitized driver display, a height-adjustable driver seat, and an 8-inch touchscreen system with wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. You do not get any auto AC and have to do with a manual air conditioner.
The Exter S variant comes with essential safety features. These include 6 airbags, TPMS, 3-point seatbelts for all seats, and rear parking sensors. However, premium features such as the single-pane sunroof, cruise control, wireless phone charging, and a reversing camera are reserved for the higher-spec variants, offering an extra level of luxury and convenience to those who opt for them. This said, it still offers a pretty robust safety package.
Powertrain
The Exter is available with two engine options: a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.2-litre petrol+CNG engine. The 1.2-litre petrol engine generates 83PS of power and 114Nm of torque, and it can be paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed AMT. On the other hand, in CNG mode, the engine produces 69PS of power and 95Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. These engine choices offer a range of power and fuel efficiency options to suit different driving preferences and requirements.
PRICE AND RIVALS
Hyundai has set the price for the Exter S trim between Rs 7.27 lakh to Rs 7.97 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Positioned in a competitive segment, the Exter competes with other micro SUVs such as the Tata Punch, Citroen C3, Nissan Magnite, and Renault Kiger.
Verdict
The Hyundai Exter is a new micro SUV offering a decent set of features and safety elements. It comes with a 1.2-liter petrol or petrol+CNG engine and lacks certain premium amenities. Priced competitively, it competes with other micro SUVs in the market. With a starting price of Rs.5.99 lakhs, surely it ruffles some feathers.
