KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Mahindra Thar crosses the 1 lakh unit sales milestone
- More affordable 2WD version launched a few months back
- On sale since August 2020
Since its highly anticipated launch in 2023, Mahindra Thar has reached the 1 lakh sales milestone. Having the time of its life, the Thar continues to enjoy buzzing demand and long waiting lines of enthusiasts to take it home. Breaking into this category was never easy, but Thar made it look that way.
Let's look at the journey that it took to achieve this milestone.
Mahindra Thar - 1 Lakh Strong
Since its launch back in August 2020, the craze is not getting flatlined. It still has more than 1 year waiting period in some parts of the country. Getting the Indian market ready to accept a lifestyle vehicle in large numbers was no cakewalk. But Thar did that, and that too in big numbers. Opening up this segment made way for better inclusion of this segment among the masses. This milestone of 1 lakh production units is an indication of the shift in consumer behavior as well.
It is interesting to note that the Tata Harrier took 4 years to reach this feat, being a more family-friendly car.
Engine
The Thar is available in both a 4WD and a 2WD system. Where the 2WD is available in a 1.5-liter diesel and 2.0-liter petrol, the 4WD version comes with a 2.2-liter diesel and a 1.5-liter petrol unit. Both versions can be had with either a manual or an automatic transmission.
The 2.0-liter Petrol engine generates a power of 150bhp@5000rpm and torque of 320Nm@1500-3000rpm. The 1.5 liter Diesel engine generates a power of 116.93bhp@3500rpm and torque of 300Nm@1750-2500rpm. The 2.2-liter diesel engine puts out 130 Ps power with a peak torque of 300 Nm.
Mahindra Thar Price
The Mahindra off-roader prices start from Rs. 10.55 lakhs to 13.5 lakhs for the Rear Wheel Drive variants. The 4WD version costs in the range of Rs. 13.87 lakhs and Rs. 16.87 lakhs ex-showroom.
VERDICT- The rugged appeal and strong build of Mahindra Thar attract a lot of enthusiasm to the showrooms. Off-roading, which was once a hobby project of few, has now turned into a hobby of the masses, thanks to this Thar. Owing to all these factors, it clocked the 1 lakh units mark, and observing the current trend, the next 1 lakh will most likely be scored in a much shorter time than this one.
