SUVs are the new trend of India and what SUV it is if not in black. SUVs do look amazing in black colour and we have enough drooled over the Black Rangies. The only SUV which resembles the most with the Range Rovers is the Tata Harrier. Tata launched the Dark edition of the Harrier and that was the best looking SUV in the market, no further questions! But recently, on the Jeep India's third anniversary, we saw the launch of the limited-run Compass Night Eagle edition and that was aimed straight to the Harrier. With just 250 units reserved for the Indian market, which one would you pick. We decided to help you with the choice of Jeep Compass Night Eagle Vs Tata Harrier Dark Edition.
Jeep Compass Night Eagle Vs Tata Harrier Dark - Design and Dimensions
The Jeep Compass was the most-talked car of its segment at a time but it got lost in the segment later. The Compass is a sorted-looking SUV with tradition JEEP signature design elements. Put the Harrier in the corner for a second and you cannot fault the design of the Compass. It may look smaller and lack the masculine appeal but the seven-slat grille and squared-off wheel arches do speak in its favour.
The Tata Harrier has garnered the good interest of enthusiasts and credits where due, Tata Motors' design team has done a stupendous job with the Harrier. First shown at the 2018 Auto Expo as a concept, we were stunned by the fact that the production-model was very much close to the concept. The Harrier was also the first car in India to offer the split headlight setup and now it's everywhere - even in the Renault Kwid! One also cannot miss the proportions of the Harrier which are much bigger than that of the Compass. How bigger? Check for yourself in the table below!
Model | Jeep Compass | Tata Harrier |
Length | 4395mm | 4598mm |
Width | 1818mm | 1894mm |
Height | 1640mm | 1706mm |
Wheelbase | 2636mm | 2741mm |
Ground Clearance | 178mm | 205mm |
Boot Space | 408L | 425L |
Jeep Compass Night Eagle Vs Tata Harrier Dark - Interiors and Features
The Jeep Compass Night Eagle Edition gets an all-black dashboard along with Techno Leather seat upholstery. That makes for a good-looking interior and the perceived quality on the inside is great too. We have multiple gloss black touches inside the cabin and also "Night Eagle" badging. As the Night Eagle trim is based on the Longitude trim of the Compass, we get the same amount of features. Features like four airbags, 18-inch gloss black alloy wheels, cruise control (AT only), 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto and Apple Car Play, ABS, EBD, ESC, traction control, keyless entry and go are offered.
Moving to the Harrier Dark, it also gets all-black interiors and the wooden finish on the dashboard has been replaced with a brushed grey finish. It is obvious that the perceived quality of Harrier's interiors isn't as good as that of the Compass. Tata still has a long way to achieve the perfect fit and finish a customer deserves after paying over 20 lakh. Moreover, the Harrier is packed with features and it offers much more than the Compass. We get a semi-digital instrument cluster, drive modes, 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment with all connectivity features, panoramic sunroof, cruise control, ABS, six airbags, EBD, ESP, Hill Hold, keyless entry and go and a lot more features are offered.
Jeep Compass Night Eagle Vs Tata Harrier Dark - Engine and Performance
The Jeep Compass is the leader when we talk engines. The Jeep Compass is offered with two engine options - 1.4-litre Multiair petrol and 2.0-litre multijet diesel. As the Harrier is only offered with a diesel engine - taken from the Compass, we pit the diesel engines here. The 2.0-litre diesel produces 173 PS and 350 Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed manual and 9-speed AT. The Compass has the upper hand here as the diesel AT of the Compass also gets the popular 4X4 drivetrain. Having the option of 4X4 under its sleeves, the Compass is the preferred choice for adventure junkies.
Moving to the Tata Harrier, it sources its only 2.0-litre diesel engine from FCA and also gets the similar state of tune now. Tata has chosen the 170 PS tune rather than the older 140 PS power output. The Harrier was offered with only a 6-speed manual before but now it also gets an option of 6-speed AT - sourced from Hyundai. Despite having the legendary underpinnings of the Land Rover, the Harrier skimps on offroad capabilities and lacks the 4X4 option. In terms of overall driving dynamics and offroad prowess, we pick the Compass over the Harrier without a second thought.
Jeep Compass Night Eagle Vs Tata Harrier Dark - Price and Verdict
Here come the interesting bit and the end of this comparison. Both the Compass and Harrier share the same heart and may appeal equally to a lot of buyers. However, the Harrier has a lot going for it. The Harrier looks better, sports bigger dimensions, offers much more features and also set you back much cheaper than the Compass. It may sound one-sided but the Compass does attract a different set of buyers. But the lack of features with the Compass and steep price makes it a sour deal.
Did we even mention that the Night Eagle trim of the Compass is just limited to 250 units in India? There are likeable chances of the Night Eagle trim getting sold out by the time you are inching towards the end of this comparison. The Harrier is a much better deal when looked like a package and sounds more appealing. The Harrier should be your choice if you want a road-going stunning SUV but the Compass would suit your offroad cravings better.
