The 2020 Thar has grabbed a lot of eyeballs, first because of its Jeep Wrangler inspired look, secondly because of the huge waiting period on the bookings and the third and the most important is the 4 stars Global NCAP rating. However, there's still one point missing and that is, Mahindra is planning to bring the front-facing rear seat as standard in 2020 Thar.
Before we go any further and bring you all the details regarding this decision of front-facing rear seat in 2020 Mahindra Thar, make sure you are a member of our exclusive 91Wheels Telegram group where we bring you all the latest information related to the Indian Automotive Industry.
In a recent crash test report by the Global NCAP, the 2020 Thar scored 4 stars which is excellent for an SUV based on the body on frame platform. It also scored the highest in child occupancy with 41.11 points out of 49. This was possible only because of the three-point seatbelt and ISOFIX anchor point on all seat in the AX option and LX variants.
It should be noted that the top-spec variant of Thar was tested at the Global NCAP which comes with a front-facing rear seat. Now, this same result would have not been possible if the base AX variant had gone for testing.
Also, this AX variant has been temporarily discontinued due to the huge booking number and waiting period extending up to 7 months. Yes, that is the craze of new Thar in the Indian markets. Maybe this will be a good time for the Indian carmaker to ditch the side facing seat for a front-facing rear seat as standard. This will only help in ensuring safety to all the passengers sitting inside when a crash will happen.

The safety features of the new Thar include dual airbags, front seat belt reminder, ISOFIX points, high-speed alert system, rear parking sensors, electronic stability control with rollover mitigation technology, antilock braking system and electronic brake-force distribution as standard.
The 2020 Thar is available with two engine options - a 2.2-litre turbo diesel unit which makes 130 PS of power with a peak torque of 300 Nm and the newer 2.0-litre mStallion petrol which makes 150 PS with 320 Nm of peak torque. Both the engines get mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and an optional 6-speed AT unit. The prices of new Thar starts from Rs 9.80 lakh and the top model fetches till Rs 13.75 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi.
