Renault Duster 7-Seater To Be Called Boreal

Renault has officially named its upcoming 7-seater SUV the Boreal, which is set to debut first in Brazil and later expand globally. Drawing inspiration from 'Boreas', the Greek god of wind, and the Latin term for 'north wind', the name reflects strength, comfort, and premium appeal- qualities Renault wants the SUV to embody, says Sylvia dos Santos, Naming Strategy Manager at Renault Brand Global Marketing. It's also a nod to the aurora borealis and is expected to be a three-row version of the next-gen Renault Duster. It could arrive in India by 2026, where the name has already been trademarked.

The cabin of the upcoming SUV is expected to carry forward its rugged personality with a modern twist. Key interior elements include a distinctive flat-bottom steering wheel, bold hexagonal air vents with Y-shaped inserts, and a clean dashboard layout anchored by a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen. Tech and comfort features will include wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, a digital driver's display, ventilated seats, automatic climate control, and a 6-speaker sound system, making it a well-equipped, premium-feel space aimed at enhancing everyday usability and driving comfort.

Powertrain Details

Renault hasn't officially confirmed the powertrain details for the Indian market, but it's expected to mirror the engine options of the upcoming Duster. The Renault Boreal SUV will share its powertrains with the next-gen Duster, offering a 1.6-litre petrol hybrid and a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine in global markets. The company is actively evaluating the introduction of a strong hybrid setup for India, which could be offered on both the Boreal and Duster. Like its 5-seat sibling, the Boreal will come with front-wheel or all-wheel drive options, depending on the region, and offer multiple terrain modes as well.

The Renault Boreal is expected to launch here by the end of 2026, where it will take on the likes of Hyundai Alcazar, MG Hector Plus, and others in its class.

Verdict

Renault is betting big on the Renault Duster rather than the Renault Boreal as the former evokes a deeper sentiment and a sense of nostalgia play as well. The Boreal is the obvious progression for the large families and also those who want a bigger footprint on the road. As for the India space, these SUVs already have a keen buyers interst and could prove to be the turning point for Renault to be again considered in the main league.
