Maruti Suzuki recently revealed the official claimed fuel efficiency figure of the soon-to-launch 5-door Jimny 4X4 SUV. Maruti Jimny mainly rivals the Mahindra Thar. On the one hand, Maruti Jimny only gets a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, its biggest rival Mahindra Thar offers a bigger & more powerful 2-litre TGDi turbo petrol engine. Not just this, there are many more differences between both SUVs. Let's take a look at these differences in the fuel efficiency & performance figures of Maruti Jimny and Mahindra Thar.
Maruti Jimny Vs Mahindra Thar: Fuel Efficiency Comparison
Maruti Suzuki claims that the 5-door Jimny with its 1.5-litre K15B naturally aspirated petrol engine and 5-speed manual gearbox has been certified by ARAI to give 16.94 kmpl of fuel efficiency. Whereas the Jimny with the 4-speed torque converter automatic gearbox has been certified by ARAI to give 16.39 kmpl of fuel economy. This engine in the Jimny produces 104.8 PS of power and 134.2 Nm of torque. Also, it comes standard with Suzuki's AllGrip Pro 4X4 system (with Low Range Transfer Gear).
The Mahindra Thar's petrol engine variants, on the other hand, come with a bigger and more powerful 2-litre mStallion TGDi turbocharged petrol engine with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox option. Moreover, Mahindra Thar also offers the choice of a 4WD/4X4 (with High & Low Reduction Gear) drivetrain or an RWD (Rear-Wheel Drive) drivetrain.
On the fuel efficiency front, Mahindra Thar's petrol manual gets an ARAI-certified figure of 12.4 kmpl. However, the ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure of the Thar petrol automatic is not available. Therefore, here we can assume it to be around 10.4 to 11.4 kmpl. Still, in both the manual and automatic transmission case, the Jimny offers much better fuel efficiency numbers.
Though Mahindra Thar gets lower fuel efficiency figures compared to the Maruti Jimny, it is due to the bigger, more powerful, and turbocharged 2-litre engine in the Thar. Also, when comparing the fuel efficiency figures of the Jimny manual & Thar petrol manual, the Jimny offers around 4.5 kmpl more on the fuel efficiency front.
