Mercedes-Benz G 580: Details

When it comes to the design of the G 580, the car maker stuck to the formula of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', and honestly, why fiddle with a design that still clearly works? The G 580 retains the core design silhouette of the regular G-Wagen, featuring a closed-off panel and an illuminated border replacing the conventional grille. The hood has been raised slightly, and the A-pillar cladding is also new.

At the event, Mercedes-Benz has also shown what looked like a lower-spec model, which featured a conventional grille with vertical slats.

Some more details include 18-inch alloy wheels with 5 twin-spoke rims are available as standard. Another key highlight is the square-shaped box which carries the charging equipment for the G 580, and it replaces the stepney at the rear.

The electric G is also built on a ladder-frame chassis, just like its combustion-engined sibling. A solid-axle setup is said to provide enhanced grip and better wheel articulation. Over bad roads and situations involving plenty of suspension travel, the solid-axle setup helps keeping the top of the tyres completely flat and does not change their angles. However, this setup is also said to affect the vehicle's ride quality.

In terms of off-roading capabilities, the G 580 comes with 850mm of water wading depth, approach and departure angles of 32-degree and 30.7-degree respectively, climbing angle of 45-degree, a ramp-breakover angle of 20.3-degree, and a ground clearance of 250mm.

The G 580 gets a 116kWh battery pack, with a WLTP-claimed range of 473km on a single charge. This battery can be charged via either a 11kW wallbox AC charger, or a 200kW DC fast charger.

In terms of performance, the G 580 claims some rather mind-shattering numbers; with four electric motors powering each wheel individually, the power and torque output figures stand at 580bhp and 1164Nm of torque. Interestingly, Mercedes says the name of the car foreshadows its power figure.

In terms of features, the G 580 comes with a 12.3-inch blended screen display for the instrument cluster and the infotainment, augmented reality-based navigation, 20 G-Class specific voice commands, two 11.6-inch screens for the rear passengers, a dashcam, a unique 'off-road cockpit', a transparent bonnet function, virtual differential locks via torque vectoring, the G-Roar sound experience with G-Class specific driving sounds, off-road crawl mode, and last but not the least, the G-Turn.

Verdict

With the G 580, the G-Wagen goes fully electric, and it does not have any direct competitors as of now. The G 580 is going to be a standout car for many reasons, most particularly the G-Turn feature which is likely to become a trend on social media soon enough.
