Royal Enfield Scram 650 is in the works. The neo-retro bike has been spied in a production-ready avatar by team 91Wheels. The upcoming Scrambler looks based on the current 650cc twins. However, with a different design approach; there are exciting changes to look forward to. Read all of its design, features, & technical details below.
Royal Enfield Scram 650: What Do We Know So Far?
DESIGN & FEATURES
The first thing to look out for is the proper scrambler design. The new 650cc bike is based on an upright riding position. This is preferably done for an enhanced soft-trail riding experience. To support this fact, it gets dual-purpose tyres with spoked rims. Meanwhile, spoked rims indicate that it will get tube-type tyres. We wish that RE will listen to the feedback of its current 650cc owners & fit the Scram with tubeless tyres. Moving on, the front uses the same LED headlight seen on the newly debuted Super Meteor 650. Additionally, it gets USD front fork suspension along with a raised mudguard. The fuel tank design looks similar to that of the Interceptor 650. In a similar fashion, the frame tubes and the side panels are also similar to the Interceptor.
The test bike we spied on had a single-piece seat that looked well-cushioned. However, no comments further as it is a test bike. Meanwhile, the handlebar looked similar to the current Interceptor. It had the same crossbar but it was painted in a matt-black shade. Meanwhile, the switchgear looks similar to the Hunter 350. The rider footpegs have also seemed to be revised in terms of design and positioning. The rear end of it used a tail-tidy setup with round halogen turn indicators and a round LED taillight similar to that of the Hunter 350. The rear end also uses a new spring-type suspension. Additionally, the rear tyre looks like a possible 17-inch fat dual-purpose spoked rim. Meanwhile, the front tyre also may get the same 17-inch tyre with a different profile.
ENGINE & SPECIFICATIONS
Now, the most important and exciting part of it. The Scram 650 will be getting an all-new exhaust system. It is a two-in-one setup with a single and small exhaust can. The sound of it was very bassy and felt upmarket as well. Meanwhile, the short end can possibly mean increased agility inside the traffic or over bad roads. It seems that RE is trying to concentrate the center of mass in the middle of the Scram 650cc via the new exhaust. All in all, a much-required change. We're also expecting that this new exhaust shall make an entry on the updated Interceptor & Continental GT 650 sometime in the future.
Meanwhile, the engine seems to be the same 648cc, parallel twin. It gets the air/oil-cooling along with the chrome treatment. This engine has been a worldwide success for RE. It makes a peak power of 47 bhp & 52 Nm of peak torque. Meanwhile, a 6-speed gearbox delivers this power to the rear wheel of the Scram 650. RE will possibly provide the features like a slipper-assist clutch on the Scram as well.
RE Scram 650: What's Still Unknown?
The spied test bike had a wiring setup fixed under the seat. The wiring setup can possibly mean that RE is still working on tweaks. Meanwhile, the overall design & technicals look production-ready. However, we're unsure of its certainty as a production prototype. Also, the features list like the spoked rims and a single-pod offset instrument panel shall get revised. How? Well, RE might offer tripper navigation and alloy wheels on the production model. As it is a test bike, nothing can be claimed strongly as of now.
Another aspect of which we're unsure is its pricing. On one side, the Super Meteor 650 has debuted with a number of added features and changes. Hence, we are already prepared that RE will price it somewhere around Rs 3-3.5 lakh bracket. However, the positioning of the Scram 650 is still unsure. As it gets shared mechanicals and even the list of features is only slightly revised; where will it be placed? We suspect that RE might price it somewhere around the Continental GT 650. Additionally, the time frame of its launch is also unknown for now.
Verdict
A recently leaked document from RE's internal meeting went viral on the internet. The document showed that RE is focusing to expand its 650cc lineup with multiple models. One of the silhouettes pointed towards a Scrambler bike also. Considering the increasing craze for Scrambler design worldwide, it'll be now one of the most anticipated models from RE to launch in near future. However, we know RE takes its own sweet time before debuting its bikes. It means that the Scram 650 is still away from its launch or debut day. But, as the road testing has begun; the hope of it being showcased in early 2023 still remains alive. For the time being, we wait.
