- Tata Motors is participating at the 2023 Auto Expo
- Blackbird mid-size SUV could be a perfect Creta rival
- Could use petrol, diesel and EV fuel option at launch
Tata Blackbird. This is one model that has been the centre of curiosity for months now, with everyone seeking a genuine answer surrounding its launch date. The company has a very strong foothold in the sub 4m compact SUV segment with the Nexon and likewise, offers the Harrier & Safari in the Rs 13-20 lakh bracket. However, they do not have a model to compete with the Creta, Seltos and Vitara. This is the Rs 10-15 lakh bracket of compact mid-size SUVs.
Though a lot of companies are skipping the upcoming Auto Expo, Tata Motors has confirmed its presence at this mega automotive platform. Like each time, they will showcase a couple of prominent concepts and one of these could be the Blackbird SUV. That said, the company remains tightlipped and has not disclosed any information yet. This particular segment witnesses action from as many as 7 models. These include the Skoda Kushaq, VW Taigun, MG Astor, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Vitara and Toyota Hyryder. However, none of these are pure EVs.

This is where Tata Motors could have a trump card. The current Nexon EV sits below the MG ZS EV and is India's largest selling electric car. The Blackbird EV (if this ever happens!) could be priced at a premium of Rs 3-4 lakh, thereby offering consumers a better alternative than the ZS EV. At the same time, the Blackbird could also come with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol unit and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel unit. Unlike the Vitara / Hyryder, it will not come with AWD or all-wheel drive though.
Do note, the images you see here are not the actual product. They are based on imagination and renders. However, given how good Tata's SUVs look like, the Blackbird could also walk away with the crown of being the best looking SUV in the segment. Will that happen? Watch this space for more.
