- Nexon and Altroz diesel to discontinue in future
- Company executive explains why and when
- Tata Nexon CNG most likely to fill its shoes
Diesel's future is quite bleak, from the passenger vehicle segment to say the least. Where some carmakers like the Maruti Suzuki, Honda, and more have put diesel to rest, from all of their segments. Even SUVs are now going towards a petrol-only or Hybrid route. But one key player, that is Tata, is still offering diesel engines, and that too, in the hatchback segment too.
But since the days of oil burners are numbered, Tata confirmed that Nexon and the Altroz in diesel mills will be discontinued.
Tata Nexon, Altroz Diesel Will Bid Farewell
Speaking to Autocar, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director at Tata Motors PV and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, said that the company will bring in CNG in segments where diesel is existing. This seems the obvious path, considering that Maruti is already following the same strategy.
While Tata and Mahindra are still betting on diesel engines, it will not be a long-term proposition. The 1.5 liter diesel engine is the updated unit that Tata used to meet the BS6 Phase 2 norms. It achieved this by using a comparatively less expensive passive SCR (selective catalytic reduction).
And even after this, they barely cleared the regulations by a tiny margin. It is highly unlikely that they can escape the next round of even stricter emission norms. This timeline can be in the ballpark of another 2 years or so.
Nexon CNG On Cards, But No Safari Or Harrier CNG
Tata going forward is looking to introduce CNG where diesel currently exists. That is, Nexon is getting CNG in the future. Just recently, Altroz CNG also made its debut, but apart from these, no other plans for CNG are in sight. Another thing to notice is that a Safari or a Harrier CNG is completely off the table. The reason for the same can be attributed to the premium price tags of these SUVs. CNG at this price point will not be able to justify the package it offers.
VERDICT - Ultimately, diesel is inevitably going to phase out, and Tata is gearing up for the transition from the smaller segment already. While Nexon CNG will do a good number as the segment response for a CNG-powered SUV is already decent, the same could not be said too easily about the Safari of Harrier.
